Galena, IL weekend ideas?

Also, not sure where home is for you, but not too far away is the Potosi Brewery...Potosi was one of the old regional breweries that went by the wayside with the megabreweries. It was refurbished and turned into a brewery/brewpub and brewery musem, and I know an ISU architect grad who worked on the project.

If it's not too far out of the way, it's worth a stop.

The Brasserie (sp?) is a nice sit down dinner place. Vinny's is good for Italian. There is also a German place on the North end of main St. (east side of the road). Can't remember the name, but the food was good. Last time there we stayed at the Ramada on the west side of town. Nothing fancy, but the hotel was clean / nice. We were with a group and got a guy to be at our beck and call to ferry us around in a van for a reasonable rate, which considering our stay involved going to a local winery and distillery, was worth the investment. The winery was pretty neat, the distillery not so much. I would recommend the hot pepper vodka they made though. Perfect for a bloody mary.
Interesting. I loved the distillery. $10. Got to sample all their wares and then sat and drank for a while.
There is a place downtown that makes a bunch of salsas and sauces that has lines of free samples. Good stuff. I am kind of a history guy and appreciated the Grant home and museum. and thefactoid I learned there was the Red Stripe Beer was originally brewed in Galena

Have a wedding on a Friday night in Chicago in a couple weeks. Thinking about coming back thru Galena and staying somewhere Saturday and possible Sunday before coming back to Des Moines.
It will be our Anniversary weekend, so I thought it might be a good idea for my wife and I.

Any recommendations on what to see, stay, eat, drink? Do I need to have a pinkie up while I drink?

Golf!

The salsa/sauce place is called Galena Canning Company (there are actually two of them directly across the street from each other). A must stop, they have more samples than you can eat! Salsas, hot sauces, toppings, jams, meatballs, dips, etc. Some of the tastiest and hottest samples you will ever find! Go and enjoy! (Then go and sample wines at three different wineries!)

Completely agree with this. Just got back from galena and we swung through potosi as well.

I would swing up to Potosi, take the Cassville Ferry back across into Iowa, and eat at Brietbach's in Balltown.

Might as well drop by Three Floyds too. I mean it's only 190 miles away.

Hit Blaum Brothers (they make the vodka noted earlier). Also, the German place mentioned before is actually German and French it's called Frits and Fritze. I'd skip the restaurants at Eagle Ridge. I'm there a lot and rarely go to them.

If you want to golf, there is plenty of that too. Eagle Ridge has 4 courses, they pretty much suit all playing levels. They are pricey though.

You will find plenty to do.

PM me if you'd like more specific info.

As others have said, golf at Eagle Ridge if your wife is into that. I go every Labor Day weekend with 7 other guys. We rent 2 condos, play 5 rounds of golf (General, North, South courses) - lodging and golf runs about $450 apiece for that package. Love the trip, love the courses.
