It's the longest continuously running rivalry in college football. It's been played every year for over 100 years, including through 2 pandemics. I think that's pretty cool. Is it that big of a deal, no. But it would be fun to keep it going, plus I think both fanbases consider it a rivalry even if it's neither teams chief rival. I think we should have come up with some kind of trophy for it for years now.

Your last sentence is the key. After >100 years of playing the game there isn't a trophy. It's literally not a rivalry game. It has been growing towards one, slowly, but has never gotten to that point. It's a fun game and a "near rivalry game" if there was such a thing, but it just isn't a rivalry game.

Living in Scottsdale, I was really hoping for an ISU road game out here sooner than 2026 with so many Iowa transplants. And that one is in Tuscon, gotta wait until 2027 to watch ISU play the SunDevils in Tempe. Other than that crap, I don't really mind it too much. Was never going to be perfect but I did think each school would get at least 1 protected rival. Oh well, it should be a fun conference moving forward though.

Absolutely but you can have multiple rivals. And who knows if that series exists in a decade.

Iowa has 3 in the B1G alone and gets to play them yearly.

I'm not saying we can't have more than one. I'm saying I think we only have one. We definitely have familiarity with a lot of the Big 8 schools and those games against conference teams mean more in the grand scheme of things, but I think if you took the average ISU fan and could somehow measure their emotional response to a game, you'd find it's Iowa, then a huge gap, then the rest.

Rivalries are usually born out of proximity and competitiveness. For us, historically we've been pretty bad so there isn't much on the competitiveness side of things. Iowa is close by though. We have to deal with their fans as our neighbors, coworkers, etc. If we continue our steady progress of playing winning football more often than not, we'll find that a few more of our conference games have some heat to it. They've all got a long ways to even get close to what we have going with Iowa though.

On the Iowa side I would argue their conference rivalries, while stronger than our conference rivalries, don't come close to how they feel about ISU.

I just don't like that the longest continually played rivalry in ALL college football is going to end.

While K-State is not as heated a rival as iowa, it's still been played 106 straight seasons - through WWII and Covid. I would have thought it would make media/publicity sense for the league to want to push that. Especially if both teams are really good in the next few seasons. Put that game on Thanksgiving weekend and sell the crap out of it. Instead, both K-State and ISU get UCF in 2027 - that no one outside Ames, Manhattan, and a small part or Orlando will remotely care about.

That's why it doesn't make sense to me. The new Big 12 should be doing anything they can to promote rivalries and stories. ISU-KSU playing 106 straight times is one of those stories.

Among the hardcore fans of both teams I think you would see some support for it. Among the more casual fans, I think you'd see the opposite. Its an event across the state even for the casual fans.
Good point. I forget we are in a bit of a vacuum here with the real sickos lol

I disagree. A rivalry doesn't have to have a trophy. It's got to have history and we have plenty of that. It's got a name and it wasn't developed by some forced corporate sponsorship. It was something that came about organically. It's much more of a rivalry than the manufactured Nebraska Iowa rivalry.

With pods you play everyone every other year. Will play home and away every 4 years with everyone in 16 team conf.

4 pods of 4. play your own pod, play 2 teams from each of the other 3 pods, then switch them the next year.

Simple

Put ISU, KSU, KU, and OSU or CU in a pod. Cant get much easier than that.

Just speculating, but I bet the league ran the TV numbers and Farmageddon wasn’t enough of a draw to protect. I hate it for many reasons.

I agree that it has to happen organically, but just playing each other clearly isn't enough to make it a rival. The fact of the matter is that KSU and ISU were 2 of the worst teams in college football over that 100+ years. If the series is competitive, it's not because two great teams were in rock-fights. There's no real hatred between the fanbases.

Lately there have been some good games. So like I said, it's been inching closer and closer to becoming a rivalry, but I really don't think it's all that close.

I'd be very curious to see the statistics of those who think ISU vs. KState is a rivalry game. Slice it up by age demographics and whether or not people think of themselves as a die-hard fan.

For my part, I'm in the 40-49 age group and I do consider myself a die-hard fan.

I wouldn't be surprised if there is more conference realignment by the time we get to 2027 anyway so this schedule will have to be redone before then anyway

I was just going to post similar. Don't sweat about losing Farmageddon in 2027, because by that time, the Big12 will add 4 more ACC schools and go to four 5-team pods (east, west, south, midwest) and a 4 team CCG format in Vegas.

Same age range and I have had season tickets for 23 years. Do I qualify in your eyes?

That was my first thought too.

In an era when history is being thrown away, why not lean into the history you have. Also two engaged fan bases that can drive to the road games.
