Buddy Holly and the rest of the Winter Dance Party tour performers at the Surf.

Chuck Berry between 1963 and 1966.

Beach Boys with Brian Wilson

Beatles in Sweden, Fall 1963. You could actually hear. Girls screaming was minimal.

Who tour stop in Peoria Exposition Opera House 1968.
Beach Boys were playing at the Surf Ballroom in Storm Lake the day after we were scheduled to go home. A family - friends in both generations - from our hometown were coming to stay that next week and we talked our parents into staying another 2 nights.

The oldest sister in that family had a drivers license and they had a ‘62 or ‘63 suicide door Lincoln convertible they let her take to ram around - as long as they took me along (I was younger than everyone else and a boy. The parents’ theory was my presence would preclude some kinds of shenanigans from happening).

Anyway, The Beach Boys were staying in room on the second floor of a motel that had an external balcony to access the second floor. The 16 year old driver took her 14 year old sister, my 15 year old sister and 13 year old me in that hot Lincoln to their motel to see what they could. The Boys were in and out of their 2nd floor rooms wearing nothing but towels and the girls were getting as close as they could under the balcony to look up under those towels while they bantered.

Good times. Fun memory.

There are some definite exceptions to this I’ve been lucky to see - there are some acts for whom the audience acts as a member.

Yeah, no thanks.

When I go to a lecture or presentation, I want to hear the person giving it, not everyone else in the audience. (happens all the time, too, yuck - My name is Farquar Q. Crapwagon, PhD candidate, and my studies show that...Gimme a break) Hate live albums from France, too. The audience always has to sing along to the point where they drown out the artist.

There is a visceral experience that happens with some of those acts that you just don’t get in person!

I don't listen to music for visceral experiences, but sometimes to forget one. ;)

First impulse was to say The Beatles 64-65-66 period, then realized wouldn't have been able to hear it (and probably barely able to see the stage. :)

Still would be fun to be able to say you were there.

This is assuming we can choose any timeline and wouldn't have to be "old enough to see a show" at the time.

There are a few others on wish-list I'll try to post later.

The only time I have seen him was at the State Fair in 2001 - it was not great, and I am a huge fan. I have heard he is just so inconsistent live - it can be excellent, or terrible.
This is true. I've seen him twice. The first time in KC and he obviously didn't care and was going through the motions. This was in front of a crowd of over 50,000. I was also at the State Fair show in 01. He was decent there IMO. My big memory from that night was the restaurant catching fire on the concourse. Steer & Stein I think.

I also remember the restaurant fire - there was a big sound during the show, if I remember!

And I think he was probably more decent than I remember - I just adore him, and I think I was hoping for life-changing or something, as it was right around the time he released Love and Theft, which was incredible. If I remember correctly, it felt a little slurry, like maybe he'd been drinking or something. I suppose if I were Bob Dylan and performing at a state fair, I might drink, too.

Aerosmith in Hilton?
I was there for that. And several otherGnR shows from the time period. Honestly, if you saw them back then, it was either going to be really, really good, or really, really bad. All depended on what shape/mood they were in. Was supposed to see them in KC, the night after Axl jumped in the crowd and started a riot in St. Louis. Didn't realize KC show was cancelled until we got there.

Swore I'd never see them again, but caved when the Not in this Lifetime tour came around. They were honestly way better older and sober. I understand they've gone downhill since they've been touring nonstop for the last few years. Don't imagine Axl's voice has much left in it.

Their show at the Target Center in Minneapolis in 1992 was the best of the 4 times I saw them. They didn't start until about 11pm and by the time the first song ended you couldn't be mad about it.
