He didn't do his homework on Chizik, he went after a name. Chizik was known for his Tampa 2 defense in the SEC. But here is the thing about the SEC he coached in, while the offenses had talent, the schemes were very archaic. When Chizik got to the Big 12 with the new spread offenses, his defenses at Texas got LIT. Vince Young bailed Texas out a lot while Chizik was there.

Chizik was the TOP HC prospect in the country. Wildly assumed he’d get a top notch HC opportunity. We were the 5th clarinet that couldn’t believe the starting QB wanted to take us to the dance.

He assumed his level of awesome would be enough to turn us around with little to no effort. He’d pick up the phone, recruits would swoon and beat a path to Ames. Other teams would fall barren at the sight of him on opposing sidelines.

I get why JP went for it. I’m sure he felt like he had launched us to a new level as an AD that we could get this rising star.

I remember when he told our team he is not coming down to their level, they have to get up to his level. Wow he was arrogant.

Kinda interesting that we are playing every team with a new coach (so far) in the Big 12 next year. Makes it even harder to predict.
