I was an Athletic Trainer there during those years. All of the time spent on that turf during two-a-days, your whole body hurt at the end of the day, and I wasn't getting tackled on it. It was horrible!

I was a ball boy and I told my dad I didn’t ever want to play college football because the ground is to hard. It was basically matted carpet on concrete

I’m seeing players slipping and sliding all over the place in the Texans/ Cowboys game.

Even cost Dallas a FG as Aubrey slipped on his plant foot.

Terrible!

Was SE Iowa
Comments about high school synthetic fields:
often do not spend $$ for grooming equipment
often depend on installer to come back to groom and may not show up in timely manner
may have less expensive fabric or bad installers
too much or to little infill, bad drainage, grass fibers laying flat
if flat, sunlight can age fibers. Should be unright.

all synthetic fields are damn hot. Early rumors: use white rubber infill or green rubber infill. Both bad ideas due too expensive and other reasons.

ISU will have zero problems they already have grooming equipment and expertise from synthetic fields already

The field looked OK from my seat in the upper deck but when I got on the field after the game it was obviously not in good shape. Not much grass left and that’s not just from the wear and tear of 1 game. If we had to host a playoff game in 2 weeks I think we may be looking at another Drake type surface.

That said, I’m still 100% in favor of keeping the grass. I’m sure the surfaces at Soldier Field and Lambeau are not great in Dec and Jan.

Both those fields have heat and I’m sure they have expensive grow lights to keep the grass going. All the night games and this cold snap hurt our field. I think it held up about as well as we could hope.

All in on having natural grass.

I also went on the field last night - couldn’t believe the condition it was in. Matted down and hard as a rock.
We commented on that too. Would hurt like a ***** to get tackled on it.

Not exactly sure.
If we want to host, may need to get heating elements between the hashes like the pros have. Gophers got lucky and had the Vikings do it for them when they were playing there.

Didn’t notice the field as an issue at all during the game last night.
Higgins’ stop and spin on that one catch says all you need to know. I think the slippery turf issue was overblown all year. Just another talking point to complain about that was only an issue because the announcers and opposing coaches kept complaining about it. Natural turf giving way is a feature not a bug. It saves wear and tear on joints.
