Favorite Golf Courses

Man, going to be tough for me to narrow down my favorite courses. I've been very lucky between playing golf in college and being in the industry until a couple years ago. Have a couple of really cool new courses lined up for this year.

Top Iowa Courses:
DMGCC both
Glen Oaks
Echo Valley (new 9 only, other 18 are meh)
Stone Creek in Williamsburg...best 9 hole course I've ever played
Bent Tree in C Bluffs
Davenport CC
TPC Deere Run(yes I know its IL)
Harvester is overrated as ****

Toughest courses I've played:
Princeville at Hanalei(about 3 years ago before it went private)
Estancia Club(Scottsdale)
Scottsdale National
Princeville Makai
Hazeltine
Desert Mountain - Chiricahua (Scottsdale)
Desert Highlands
Desert Forest
Poppy Hills
Tobacco Road
Bulls Bay

Favorite Courses:
1 - Princeville at Hanalei (Kauai)
2 - Classic at Maddens(Brainerd, MN)
3 - Poipu Bay (Kauai)
4 - Hazeltine
5 - Tobacco Road (NC)
6 - Whisper Rock - Upper (Scottsdale)
7 - Caledonia Golf & Fish (near Myrtle Beach)
8 - Bulls Bay (Awendaw, SC)
9 - Deacon's Lodge (near Brainerd, MN)
10 - Crooked Stick (IN)

That's quite a list. Give me some of those connections! :)

How was estancia? I tried to use a connection to get on there recently and failed.

I also played green valley ranch down there. That place reminded me of a CC straight out of the 70’s. Old, rich, white money. It was crazy. Course was super easy I thought, though. Short.

I know you know what you're talking about but, man, we have some wildly different opinions and some pretty close ones. I loved Maddens but did not like Deacons. I also don't think Harvester is overrated but I would probably put it behind BTR and Spirit Hollow. I am glad to see you didn't have TCI down. It's a fun course to play once in awhile, but it's not really a great course.

That said, I'm heading to the Waste Managment and we're playing some golf down there a few days. I know we're hitting Troon and We-ko-pa but outside of that we're trying to find 2-3 more rounds somewhere if you have any good recommendations for the little people. Your list for Scottsdale is all private stuff.

I'll be at Waste Management open as well. Still deciding whether or not to pull out the ole Iowa State Hoiberg jersey to get drunk in on #16.

Where are you staying? I'm a little people and can lend a hand.

Played Chiricahua in November for the first time. Had a 3 hour frost delay and got pretty drunk but the course is sweet. Greens were rolling almost 11. I somehow managed to only lose 1 ball and shot 78 so I left happy

I'm not exactly sure. It's near Las Sendas, that's all I really know.

OK. If you're staying on that side of town, recommendation #1 would be Dinosaur Mountain in Gold Canyon. That's around $200/round. It's a haul from TPC, but is probably 1/2 hour from Las Sendas. Fun mountain course, good views.

There are a million places to play, so help me narrow it down. Do you prefer:
- Mountain or flat layout?
- Price tag? You're already playing two pricey courses, so under $100, $100-200, or price is no object?
- Bruising course or something more playable?
- Within 1/2 hour of where you're playing or distance no object?
- Anything else?

Sure thing, would be happy to help. Just had a friend out in December, we played four rounds in four days while keeping the budget in check. He was pleased with all of the selections. There are so many courses down here it's hard to disappoint, but it's also easy to drop a grand on golf in a hurry.

January/February/March prices are insane, those of us daily fee guys have to scrape the bottom of the barrel to avoid going broke, but the rest of the months we can usually find a decent deal on a good course.

Best months for golfers to visit, in my opinion, are late May/early June and December. In late May the prices drop to summer rates, it's hot, but it isn't humid yet, and the prices are dirt cheap. You can play just about anywhere you want and cost isn't a concern. In December, the weather is still nice (though it does occasionally get cool), overseed is finished pretty much everywhere and the prices haven't hit the stratosphere yet.

I don't really care too much except we want to keep it somewhat close since we will be heading out that afternoon/night. We kind of decided price wasn't going to influence us much. I fully expect to be pretty battered playing those two places first anyway, so I'd go for anything the last day.

Then go for a Sun City course. $18 round and drink your face off. ;)

How did you like Hazeltine? Its one of my bucket list courses and I think it would be fun to golf somewhere I've watched a tournament

I played there back in 2002, it was windy that day and I recall being in a lot of bunkers. Obviously it was a fun experience and knowing the history of the place makes it all the better.

Each year right after Labor Day they do a "Chaska Golf Experience" event. You play Hazeltine and Chaska Town Course and usually get two meals in one day. I think the cost is usually around $300-$400. One of the best ways to get on Hazeltine. Chaska Town Course has it on their event calendar, can probably call them to get some more details on it.

Then I'll stick with my recommendation of Gold Canyon/Dinosaur Mountain....or you can take Cyclone.TVs answer. Join the blue hairs for a good time.

Other options in that area (< 15 minutes) that are closer but not as good as Dinosaur Mountain are...
- Las Sendas (a decent course with some nice mountains, but you'll get some really strange bounces...course knowledge matters)

- Red Mountain Ranch (I actually don't care for this place, or really, any Pete Dye layout)

- Longbow (a good course. Very flat. It does get a lot of tournament play and tee boxes change the course difficulty drastically)

Any other public course in the east valley should be avoided.

Tempe, which is between you and TPC has...
- ASU Karsten (I think this is one of the most overrated courses in the city...go elsewhere)

- Papago (not a bad course, this is where the ASU golf teams are moving to)

You're already playing two very nice tracks. Scottsdale golf will be an absolute zoo surrounding the tournament so I won't recommend any of those courses, same for Fountain Hills. There are also some good courses out west but those would be 45-90 minutes, so I've left them off the list. If you were staying elsewhere, I would make some different recommendations.

All of the courses above will be cheaper than Troon/WeKoPa. Dinosaur is close, the rest should be significantly cheaper. Longbow may be around $150.
