Emotional Investment

I hit myself in the head with both hands when Jefferson's layup didn't fall for a chance at a 3 point play. I really thought this season was going to be really special. Just hoping they can come together in the end.

I appreciate the levels of success we are seeing in MBB and FB.

That being said, I think it was more fun when we were the underdog most of the time.

I like to think I have a unique perspective but maybe I don't. Having played I know how much the players are invested emotionally, mentally and physically.

So now as a fan, while I hate when we lose (because I always want my favorite and school to win) it isn't something that ruins my day or night (except if we lose to Iowa, then I'm pissed). I feel more disappointed for the players because I know how much they put in to it. For me the games over, listen to the post game show and move on with my list of things I need to do.

My wife however is way to emotionally invested imo, she rivals some of the posters in the game threads. I always have to talk her off the ledge after a loss because she doesn't understand how if we are supposed to be so good why we lose any game (unrealistic expectations). And she lets it ruin her day/night when we lose. But I can't get to upset because I am happy that since she's an Iowa grad she loves ISU athletics so much especially when she grew up everything hawk (I am obviously very good at brainwashing).
I have a University of Illinois grad wife who has seen the light and is more invested now than I.

Game threads are garbage and while I don’t always avoid them, I do about 90% of the time. By the time I’m in a game thread it’s kind of gone the opposite way.

But, yes, expectations drive a ton of it. The expectations we were fed with this team was final 4. I bet if we went back and listened to podcasts early in the season, we would have heard Sweet 16 would be a disappointment.

I’ve mentioned before that our basketball program is weird. We have a ton of Sweet 16s over the past 15 years but yet haven’t gotten over the hump of going further. Teams with far less success have gotten to elite 8s or final 4s. So I think that weird bad luck plays into some of the handwringing this year. It reminds me of 2021 football. Both are very good seasons when matched against history but injuries and other factors kind of screwed with it b
I am really not trying to be rude to you, others, or Blum/cw but some of you really need to stop taking podcasts as gospel. I’ve seen it a lot since the OSU game “we were told this was a final four team” “we were fed this team had the talent to win a natty” and then you guys get upset because you set high expectations from what others are saying on a podcast.

To be honest, its kind of on the individual if their expectations weren’t meant because some podcasters said something about the final four.

I feel bad for them. They are good at their job but aren’t basketball savants and then get the backlash when we lose because some people can’t form their own opinions.

I have strived to be more objective on Iowa St over the years and to aim to not ignore the signs of how the team will finish. Saying that, sweet sixteen is my hope for this year, BYU loss last night, albeit recency bias I thought was a must win for ISU final four hopes. Now I am hoping for scorched earth early exit from KC so they can rest and recover. Also hoping for Denver and West Coast draw.

It's been weird for basketball. We have good players and good coaches, and everyone still seems to be bought in.

Some of these losses were head scratching and we didn't play to our expectations. But we're so invested in ISU I think we forget that the other team has good players and good coaches that are also trying to win the game.

I'm still excited for the tournament. This team will be in a good position to make the second weekend. And the fun of the tournament is that anything can happen. Which could mean a Final Four, or an upset *shrug*

This is really good insight. Curious - how does a player react to a loss like last night? "Aw shucks" and move on? Dwell on it for weeks? How about a loss like Oklahoma State? Obviously everyone is different but its a long season so you can't get super high or super low and continue to be successful.

The internet is a cesspool sadly. Even with myself, I've noticed how much calmer and less negative I am when I'm at games and don't go online during them versus watching at home on my couch. Internet breeds negativity.

i think we have the best chance to get to a final four since 2000. I’ll take that all day every day. I don’t even really care about the season anymore. And the Big 12 tourney is even losing its luster for me. Everything is about the real tourney because that’s how we keep
Propelling forward. Anything less than the Sweet 16 is going to be tough to swallow. Get to the Sweet 16 and I’ll always be happy because I know that means we’re still going to keep rising.

Good point. I added the Big 12 tournament because, if you as a fan go in person, its an AMAZING experience when ISU wins the tournament. I've been to multiple B12T when ISU won and its a lasting memory of the season, no matter how the NCAAT plays out. If you don't attend, its definitely a "wow that was fun but now the real tournament starts."

I try to remember that in 5 years, we won't remember 95% of these regular season games unless something super special happens like beating the #1 team, huge comeback (last night would have been a Hilton all-timer), win that led to a conference title, etc. So a game like BYU, while very emotionally charged, really doesn't change anything with this season. Maybe that's my own coping mechanism, haha.

I’m inherently just a super competitive person. I played (low level) college baseball and the only thing that even rivals the way I felt when I was on the mound is the way I get during Iowa State (and especially ISU football) games. I don’t know if it’s because I’m young, dumb, both or what. I know that its weird, because I know I have zero control over what happens and I know the guys on the team are working their butts off. But something about Iowa State athletics just gets me going in a way that nothing else does.

Anytime Iowa State starts getting some serious national media attention in either football or basketball its best to put on the nut cup.
Football it was the undefeated run and talk of being in playoffs. Can't remember the publication but a story on how we cleaned out the poison in the locker room from prior year. Rocco had some pretty blunt comments. Anyway ... then went to sh*t.
After KU win this year serious talk of a 1 seed in Midwest. Then sh*t hit the fan.
Hey, I'd rather have the media attention.... but it's at that time I believe people get over the top emotionally invested. I've fallen into the trap many times.
My 2 cents

Maybe it’s because she was so emotionally invested during your playing days by seeing you and your teams commitment and just followed through with those expectations today.

I'm much better than I used to be. Bball losses don't bother me too much unless it's clear the team is trending in the wrong direction. I think some of it is NIL and what feels like a pretty unknown future for ISU and college sports in general. Plus we currently have 2 of the best coaches we have ever had and we have some decent talent so I could see how it feels like this might be our best chance to achieve some things we never have.

We have fans emotionally charged during games. We have podcast hosts battling fans and fans crapping on die hard Iowa State figures. Why does this year seem so different than previous years? The emotion seems elevated because we are good and expected to win? Is this “normal” for Top 15 teams and programs? Is it because fans are spending more money (tickets, AD donations, WeWill donations, etc) than ever before? This year has felt very different as an Iowa State fan.

Personally, I’ve felt way more emotionally invested in both football and basketball because I keep telling myself “these opportunities don’t come around very often for ISU and we better damn well capitalize” and its weird, I almost feel pressure watching the games rather than sitting back and enjoying them. Anyone else feel this way? I look back and football and think how great of a season it was but it didn’t feel that way watching games. Same with basketball – the emotional swings by fans have been huge.

For basketball, I wish we would have competed for a conference title or #1 seed but it wasn’t in the cards this year. And since we can’t do either one of those, I’m trying to put all of the “will this season be a success” eggs into the NCAA tournament and, at a much lower level, the Big 12 tournament. Losing to BYU or K-State this weekend doesn’t really change the opportunity in front of this team. If they win the Big 12 tournament and/or go to the Sweet 16 or beyond, I think we’d all agree it would be a big success. If we flame out in the first weekend, we’ll all consider it a very big missed opportunity.
I’m behind but what’s the podcast host vs fans and fans vs die hard isu figures? I’m not on twitter so could have missed it

Can't speak for Curt but in some ways it might be easier for players to move on from games at least as far as thinking about them since they quite literally have to switch the mindset to the next opponent.

After OSU, they had AZ coming to town in 4 days and there was no time to waste chewing on it.

At even the high school level and up though, getting beat badly just as things are going well, or losing a heartbreaker, etc. can linger just like a lot of other emotionally deflating things in life.

Sports are bonkers and it's why we watch.

As a kid, I loved the NCAA tourney far more than any sporting event by a mile. The first Friday of the tourney was right up there with Christmas and the last day of school for me.

Having a big drought really changes perspective. During the end of the McDermott era just the thought of watching bubble teams and having meaningful games in March seemed like an amazing thing.

The tourney is wild. Just get in the tourney every year with most in the 5 or better seed and there will be some great tourney rides.
