Anyone own or build their own sauna? I made a DIY cold plunge last year and love it. I have not settled on indoor or outdoor for the sauna. Any advice from first hand experience would be appreciated.

-Kits seem over priced
-I’m somewhat handy
-barrel saunas are trash
-wood burning heater or electric?

Haven't built one but my friends have a almost heaven barrel sauna and it's way better than they/I expected. It has a nice Harvia heater and was less than 4K. Sauna traditionalists will always say to opt for tall ceilings to get proper loyly. The barrels have too low of headroom/benches, but they're fine for the price. It'll get over 200 degrees in 30 minutes

We bought an outdoor sauna kit from https://cedarbrooksauna.com/ about 6 years ago and we LOVE it!

But yeah, if you’re handy then building one really shouldn’t be too complicated. The one thing I’d suggest is to insulate the floor really well. The cool thing about building your own is that you can get really creative. Up here in northern mn there are a LOT of really great diy saunas and I’m logging ideas that I see from others to build one if we ever move from the place we’re in.

A big question that people have is if they’re going to go with a wood burning stove or an electric stove. I’d suggest electric, you’ll sauna a lot less than you think if you go with a wood burner and being able to set a timer on the electric is great!
