So, did you - and your wife - enjoy the game and dinner? Where did you end up going and did it meet your expectations?
We ended up going to The Cafe. Really good food and a nice atmosphere. I had the meatball pizza and my wife had the ancient grains bowl, we each had a cup of soup for an appetizer. I did find the music that was playing to be an odd choice though. Pink Floyd, Jeff Buckley, the Grateful Dead…while I like them all they just seem out of place in that setting. Still, if we do get back to Ames we’d definitely go back to eat there.
Some quick thoughts on Hilton and the game. Man, it was so great to be in Hilton again and was so impressed with the atmosphere inside the arena. It’s so great seeing so many people, young and old, with their Cyclone gear and cheering and everyone all in for the team. My wife was impressed. We had a Clone Cone, danced the Juicy Wiggle, I told her all about Johnny Orr, the teams of the past and the history of Hilton Magic.
Why do people complain about the lighting? I don’t get it.
I told my wife after the game that I thought the Hilton Magic atmosphere yesterday was “average” compared to my memories. Maybe that’s because I was younger and it all “meant more” to me, maybe because it was against an unranked Baylor team and not Kansas…I don’t know. I’m not complaining, it was so great to be back there but those were just observations.
The exterior needs some upgrades. We came in from the South entrance and I was a little surprised and frankly embarrassed by the crumbling concrete of the steps/walkway into the building. Please tell me that will all be fixed soon, along with the sun faded doors.
Toure in person is even better than on the screen. That dude takes pride in his effort. I know he made mistakes with the ball yesterday but when the time came to lock in late, he did so defensively and it was cool to see. We had tickets on the lower part of Section 133 so we were right at 1/2 court. Right before his strip/bucket against Agbim those two had been jawing a bit coming out of the time out. As Agbim was bringing the ball to the logo I said to my wife, “Toure’s going to take that ball.” You could just see it in his eyes. Of course he did and as Toure was back after converting the layup he said to Agbim “I told you!” I love that fire from the kid.
I never once felt like we were going to lose the game and when push came to shove, Tamin and Jefferson (especially Tamin) just made the plays. You gotta love Seniors who have been through it all and know how to get it done when it’s needed.
I don’t need to say this but I will, for all of you locals make sure you are there for Tamin and his last game at Hilton and give him the LOUDEST roar you can. He is a legend and a loyal son forever true.
Go Clones!
