Cytown Update

They don't charge the players either for being at their game lol.

People who are going to the softball and soccer games will probably go either way if they had to pay $10 or not. Wouldn't make much of a difference in the bottom line but can only help.

Not charging for attendance feels like they're admitting defeat, that the women's teams are here just to exist to exist. That the programs are so pathetic they're not even going through the effort of charging people to be there.
Disagree completely. I have 3 daughters that all played / are playing HS softball, and we go to several softball games a year. If they charge admission, even $5, it won't happen nearly as often if at all. Hard to explain - $20 is nothing, but $20 is somehow enough to tip the scales in favor of not bothering to make the effort. And I only live about 30 minutes from the complex. My guess is they have looked at it and the advantages of not charging admission outweigh the advantages of charging.

And my guess is anyone that has seen opposing fans "shocked" that we don't charge for admission saw fans that are now living in the $EC...at least for softball. You wouldn't catch me dead at a soccer game...8U, high school, college, Premier League or World Cup...so I have no experience with that.

I have been to Indian Hills softball games watching former students playing, only people there were families of the players and a few students. Unless you are playing a rival or someone like Oklahoma when they were in the conference, most average fans could care less about the minor sports.
This reminds me about cutting the gymnastics program at ISU, for all the people complaining about it, other than parents or former athletes actually went to a match? If that sports mean that much to you, then by all means get out their a support them, donate to the team, but for many of us, we could care less if ISU has a softball or soccer team or not. I would love to see us bring back baseball, but also understand we do not have the money to support it and would struggle getting fans out to the game.

After you get in, walk 75 feet and pay for your concessions with cash.
Bound has taken over a lot of the ticketing at high school events - easier for school administration to manage. Our school and most in our conference have a ticket taker that will take cash, then pay with their credit/debit card for you.
Concessions are usually operated by booster clubs, so they will take anything they can get. You can pay with chickens at some places :jimlad:

So true! I just looked quickly and didn't realize the cladding hasn't been put on in most areas. I was gonna say all these buildings need to look next level. I'm stuck in Ankeny where besides the District and a few other buildings, everything is so cookie cutter and boring.

Even the district kind of feels like a missed opportunity. That area would have more life if a lot of those buildings had put a few floors of apartments above the offices\restaurants\etc

I live in Ankeny and we love the District area. For a young family, there is a lot of "life" in this area (particularly on summer weekends), and it keeps growing. Big fan of the 30 Hop/music amphitheater. Certainly isn't perfect, but what is.

It's definitely a very cool area that's aesthetically pleasing but yeah definitely would have loved a few of the buildings to have condos upstairs ect. lots of people like that "urban surburban" feel.

Many of them people forget that if you donate a certain amount you get free tickets in those events anyhow. I know several people that attend them only due to free tickets and they will give those free tickets away on occasion.

Well, if you’re a Cyclone fan wanting to cheer on ISU softball a week from now in Iowa City, you’re paying Iowa $10 to get in. Kinda the going rate.
But we let Hawk fans in free in Ames. Such welcoming hosts!

I know this comment is going to ruffle some feathers but we have got to have the cheapest P4 fan base in the country.

We’re complaining about potentially having to pay to park? Have you people been anywhere besides small town Iowa in the past 20 years?

Goodness gracious.

Jamie truly has an impossible job.

We have one thread on this website with people throwing fits and calling on Jamie to step down from being AD because he won’t fire Bill Fennelly and pay him his buy out. Then you have this thread where we have people complaining about having to paying $10 or $20 or whatever it’s going to be, to park their car at sporting events.

Impossible.

Welcome to Iowa. It is the state of physiological cleansing, spiritual and emotional healing, and divination.

I assumed that was red brick, always hard to really tell with these renders. If it's orange that's pretty dumb.

But I've always been disappointed in that building. Looks like your run of the mill blocky Lego plastic thing you see in every mixed use development. And the fact that it'll be useless during football gameday is pretty dumb.

But still looking forward to the rest of Cytown.

No orange brick.

It's all day basketball but the bulk of the fans are in for their game and then out. At the end of the day we are probably talking about a max of 2 establishments in CyTown. Those places will do better for Iowa State basketball games than they will for state tournament games. We aren't talking about revenue that's gonna make or break the year... Nobody in Des Moines even cared that the tournament left, that's how little impact it has.
Every been to Buzzard Billys during the state tournament ? They will be disappointed the boys left DSM. If we get decent bars and restaurants in CyTown they will be packed.

You are correct on all fronts.

The mask brings out the worst in a lot of these posters. A lot of winers and not enough check writers.

And, primarily people writing and tilting facts to support their posts. Endless, and you are correct, "impossible. "

Local conference in north Iowa doesn’t charge for middle school. Seems to be a bigger city thing when i encounter it
To be fair, I am in a 1A conference. I dont know if where I grew up in North Iowa charges or not. It does seem to be more and more these days. Everyone seems to be going to charging for everything and raising the price at the same time.

We spent almost $50 to go watch my middle school son play in a jazz contest, about 10 minute performance. $15 per person, all ages. So my myself, my wife and my youngest all charged the same. We were there less than 30 minutes including waiting in line to get into the room between bands. It was a regional contest, in Indianola. Needless to say I think it might have been a bit high priced for what it was.

From many conversations I've had with other ISU fans, I think they simply just don't grasp the concept that JP has a finite amount of money, its never enough money, and he has to make the decisions the best he can with the resources he has. Doubt he really wanted Cael or CM to go, but what's he going to do beside magically conjure up money and resources we don't have.

I only saw 1, maybe 2 people mention dislike for potentially losing free parking during basketball games. Not ALL parking is free currently, just the spots that are 1/2 mile or more away from the doors. I'd bet we're not the only P4 school that has SOME free parking for winter events within a mile of the venue.

Can't imagine you'd get many takers to pay $20 to park at JTS for basketball games. Side streets surrounding the area will get more traffic, and those lots will just sit empty anyway.
