Amazingly Johnny only won 3 tournament games in 14 years
you kind of have to throw his first 4 years out as he had to build it up from nothing. He created Hilton Magic and made ISU basketball very exciting. He almost won two Big 8 conference torunaments, refs screwed us both times I think. In one of them he actually chased the refs off the floor. He went to 6 NCAA tournaments in in last nine years on the job. He would have had 7 but lost our big to an injury to get hit by a train. And he did the non selfish thing and stepped down when he had a team of 6 seniors returning to give a new coach a chance to recruit. Got us to the Sweet 16 where we lost NC State by just 4. Came close to another sweet 16 in 1992, a Thigpin 3 went in and out in the closing moments. He scheduled a lot of tough non conference opponents and would beat them at home. Got a huge road win at #2 Purdue. A lot of people rip on Orr's record without much context on it. He was a charactor that made Cyclone basketball fun. The passion, the excitement, the culture. We owe all of that to him.

That puts things in perspective, a little.

Love me some Johnny, but it would have been nice to win a few more games, tourney games. But how can you fault Johnny Orr?

Expectations weren't so out of whack then. For some reason we think we're a blue blood now.

I think it just has been a tough few months. We were all proud of the fact/tweet that ISU was the only school in the country with four top 10 ranked teams in FB, MBB, WBB, and Wrestling. Sadly our winter sports shat the bed. I don't think anyone thought we were a blue blood in any of these sports, but we are fighting our asses off.

Not sure why people have to draw the dumb button so quick. It's your opinion. You may even change your opinion. It's fine.

Johnny Orr did some great things, things that were not done before. Hopefully TJ will bring us to BB blue blood. Never know? But we are going in the right direction.

It's OK to remember that we were not always great at BB. Far from it in some years.

Outstanding article by Hines.

I really admire coaches who are secure enough in themselves to step back and allow their assistants to actually coach. You can see it during our timeout huddles. There's no other coaching staff in the nation that's structured like ours, but I can guarantee you there soon will be.
Let coach TJ.

I'm not saying we shouldn't aspire to be better. We should. Some of the fans seem to lose all sense of historical context with some of the criticisms they have of the team and coaches. I'm sure some fans did in the 80s and 90s too, it's just the lack of an outlet like social media spared us of a lot of their dumb takes.

Social media would have ended Johnny's career early...

I think it’s always good to have some perspective. Winning games in the ncaa tournament is difficult. But TJ has quickly raised our expectations that his teams are fully capable of winning tournament games

I’d much rather have these high expectations than expectations where we feel fortunate just to make the tournament and hopefully win a game

But with high expectations comes humility. Sometimes things just don’t pan out the way you wanted. And that’s life….

It’s fine to be disappointed this morning. I am a little depressed myself. But I still feel being disappointed for a R32 exit means TJ has built a strong program

I’m looking forward to the team next year. Let’s have a great season for Lipsey to finish his amazing ISU career

and just a follow up to this. The Big 8 he coached in was very rugged with GREAT coaches.
