I was really digging into the schedule for this upcoming year, and noticed that between byes and non-con some teams won't play their first conference game until 9/27 - nearly a month after Irish Farmagedon. There will only be 5 total Big 12 conference games prior to that week (6 if you count the weird KSU/Arizona technically non-con game).

Is that an abnormally long time to wait for conference play to begin? Have I just not been paying attention?

The way the calendar falls it’s a double bye year. Week 1(Aug 30) is pretty early start date and gotta spread the byes out so not abnormal

The question is what are those pre-season matchups? If they're big TV audiences, then it's the B12's opportunity to increase the viewership during the conference schedule. Of course the ball could roll the other way where we lose these key pre-season matchups and, thus, putting the conference on the edge during the season.

9/27 actually slightly MORE than a month after Farmageddon, but splitting hairs.

If we ignore the Week 0, which Big 12 doesn't always have (two this season, KU has the other), Aug. 30-Sept. 27 is a little unusual, but somewhat common

I checked ISU recent seasons schedules (past 10 years or so). Most has been three weeks between opener and first Big 12 game, a couple of times we had a week 2 conference game.

Probably not a definitive analysis, just some observations.

I saw a headline (On3) saying the Big 12 coaches voting puts K State and ISU in the conference championship game in December. Not much respect for ASU or TTU. Only real question is, did the coaches really do the poll, or was it the guy who does the laundry?

They were asked who would play in the championship game and they couldn’t vote for their own school. KSU had 8 total votes. Iowa State had 7 and I think ASU and TTU both had 6 with Baylor TCU and Utah also receiving votes. It was at media day so it would’ve been head coaches.

Last year, most started in Week 4 (9/21).

The only year other than 2024 with 14 weeks, 9 league games and a CCG was 2019. That year, the majority started conference play in Week 5 (9/28).

In this calendar rotation, starting in Week 5 isn't some weird anomaly.
