Coaching Search Thread

Short term I think Heacock is the best chance we have at keeping this roster somewhat intact. I say "short term" knowing Jon is in the twilight of his career. Give him a short term deal with an eye to the future, then someone close to the orbit of this staff can be named his successor.
He was a disaster of a head coach at Youngstown and now he's in his mid-60s.

You don't hire an old, failed coach as some kind of weird bridge to the future.

Hiring a coach is a crap shoot. You can hire the exact guy and it fails. Then you hire a guy like TJ and think it's going to fail and its a home run. I won't judge any new coach unless it's our offenseive coordinator. I dont want Maurser. Give me some fresh young guy like Campbell was that has a lot of energy. Also make the buy out a lot more than 2 million. That way we at least get paid when they leave.

Yep, and we’ve done this enough now to know head coaching experience isn’t that important

JP has had to have been putting feelers out with multiple coaches in the last two years especially. Let's hope the guys on that list are willing and able to move like Matt was.

I'm going to throw this out there just for the sake of discussion and knowing full well it's not going to change anything but...

Jamie is very, VERY anti-the new world of college athletics. Are we completely confident in him making the right hire in 2025? It's even so much different than the TJ hire.

I just worry about him putting his accountant pants on and not being able to guarantee the next guy that he'll have the tools to compete.

Reading between the lines with some of the cryptic posts, I’m a little worried.

I absolutely agree.

Look no further than taking the $1M from Players Era and not immediately and directly pumping it back into the basketball team.

That is absolute malpractice.

And this doesn’t make me feel better.

Really? It seems like it has been pretty important.
Hoiberg did just fine. Otz did just fine at SDSU, and Rhoads really was a success that first 3 years. I don’t think it’s that important. More about the fit and putting the right people in place.

He was handed a program that had been in 6 of the last 10 IAA title games and made the playoffs once in 9 years.

0-9 against UNI
1-8 against Southern Illinois
0-6 against Western Kentucky

Lucky he got out before the Dakotas moved in.

This takes absolutely nothing away from him as a coordinator. Some guys just aren't HCs.
Ok...so he wasn't successful against a handful of few teams. A coach who walks away with a 0.576 winning % over 9 years isn't a "disaster", and least not by any sane definition of the term...

I agree…. He better not have taken that $$ from Vegas and put it in the general fund…. That was for the players !
Grounds for Firing right there !!
