Not a gimmie, but by that logic even if you miss it with presumably the best kicker in CFB, with three timeouts you can get the ball back. Hell Mevis was 9-11 on 40+ and 2-2 on 50+ this year. Give me two attempts and were golden.

ah but if you go for it you have the ability to run out the clock without the other team's offense getting the ball. The other scenario's involve getting a defensive stop:

if you kick and make it, need defensive stop to preserve win
if you kick and miss, need defensive stop to get ball back
if you go for it and make it, can run clock down and score TD or kick another fg
if you go for it and miss, need defensive stop to get ball back

Just to continue to play devils advocate. There are a lot more ifs to that third statement.

You go for it and make it (barely), get a holding penalty, incompletion, gain of 5, incompletion, now you have a 4th and 15 and an extra 5 yards on your field goal.
