Nate Schmidt is holding this team back. Offensively we are less than the sum of our parts. Lots of turnovers every game (especially when most of the ball handling players are returning from last year and we didn’t have a crazy turnover rate last year) is the coach’s fault. Clearly the players don’t understand or mesh with the offensive system at all. Need a new offense guy

What is it since January 1?

On Torvik, ISU is 30th for the season overall.
Before Jan 1, they were 4th.
But since Jan 1, they are 59th.

For reference the defense-
Before Jan 1, 42nd.
After Jan 1, 5th.

I guess you just have to hope it all comes together at the same time... like, now.

The problem is our bigs. Tre had a pretty versatile game, and Rob and Hassan were really good short roll guys. Our bigs now can't do anything outside of 2 feet, and lack Hassan's athleticism. So you either have them doing high handoffs at the high post, which is easy to guard, or playing out of the post which gums up spacing/cutting.

Boy, do we remember things differently. Yes, Tre had a versatile game, but Jefferson is way better and more rounded. If you want to talk 'can't shoot outside of 2 feet', Rob and Hassan were poster children. Yes, I wish we were getting a bit more out of Jackson (especially on the boards) because he is a physical freak, but our bigs this year are light years ahead of last year overall.

The offense kind of reminds me of Prohm's time. TJ even said the other day they don't really have a system.

There is just way too much dribbling. Even worse it seems like a lot of head down dribbling while everyone else is stationary. This is our half court offense. Usually results in turnover in traffic, throwing up a difficult shot (I guess the most hopeful option), or not even getting a shot off in time.
I'm tired of now hearing for 4 years that "this" team is just not good in half court and need transition points. Multiple players/rosters and skills/abilities have been through this system but the outcome is the same. Insanity

I would rather have a Fiesty Rob than a Soft Jackson any day of the week. No way we get outrebounded that bad if Rob was at Center last night. Rob had no offensive game at all but at least he knew that and didn't try and do things he was not capable of doing.

While true, Tre wasn’t asked to do things outside of his skill set. The staff is asking Jefferson to do things he is just unable to do right now, specifically since conference play started. He should never be an initiator, and he shouldn’t be backing guys down from 15 ft out. He is a walking turnover when he starts dribbling with guys around him.

Yeah he should operate out of the high post or the block and should never take more than a couple dribbles. Once he gets into trying to back someone down for several dribbles from a few feet away then things usually go awry

No, they are just not. Jefferson is obviously really good overall player but the front court most definitely is not defending nearly as well as they were last year.

He’s averaging 2.2 TOs per game (2nd on the team) and that doesn’t include the times where he drives in out of control and takes a bad shot. I see what the staff wants to do, but against decent or good opponents, it has been proven it won’t work.

Light years ahead overall? No chance

I think it’s pretty much a wash.

We definitely miss the defense and consistency of last year’s group.

Playing better teams. I think the problem comes from the top. When you listen to Otz talk, he's all about driving the ball and being physical on offense. If that's your offense, it's fairly easy for the opponent to just pack the middle. We need someone that understands spacing and ball movement. With this team, the extra pass is the rare exception, rather than the rule. The guys are out there doing what the coach is telling them but on the offensive end, he's just plain wrong.

By his senior year Rob had developed a really nice short roll game. He was consistent with that 6-8 foot floater. Hassan was a threat to attack the rim on lobs. We've seen a little of that with Brandt and none of that with Dishon. I would agree that Jefferson is an upgrade from Tre.

Dishon and Brandt lack the athleticism to finish at the rim, and lack the skill to score in that 8-10 foot range. That's a big issue when it comes to free-flowing half court offense.
