When I was kid (early 60"s) I had the measles, mumps, chickenpox, etc. I had it all.

I remember my best friend's mom brought her family of three kids to our house when we had the measles so that they could be exposed. The house was kept dark because it was believed that the measles would affect the eyes.

I broke out with the chickenpox at a neighbor's summer wedding. It was high mass so it seemed like it took forever. I finally got my mom's attention and showed her the spots on my arm and she got me out of the church but not before I had exposed the kids in the row in front of and behind us.

My siblings had the mumps before I did. For some reason, I just wasn't catching them. But I did take advantage of the situation and told mom I wasn't feeling well and she would keep me out of school. This worked for a couple days. I finally came down with them on a Sunday evening.

I'm glad we have vaccines for all that crap. [Self censoring the rest of my post here]

Having had chicken pox as a kid and then shingles in my 30's, I'm glad my kids won't have to experience the shingles.

I was vaccinated for all the common ones. I had Osgood schlatter and still have pretty pronounced bumps on my knees and issues with stress injuries in them.

I still remember the oatmeal baths when I had the chicken pox.
I can also remember getting excited to get it. I thought it just meant a week vacation from school haha

Remember having mumps. Went through the whole school. I remember we kids when we got to school took our chairs off the desk and put them in place to start the day. When a kid was absent it was obvious because their chairs were still upside down on their desks. A few, then a few more then me among them. I remember getting them on a Saturday Morning and being a bit mad because I would not miss as many days of school since it was the weekend. First time I remember actually feeling light-headed and realized what a fever was. Probably about 2nd or 3rd grade.

I also remember getting measles. Don't know what kind. They called them "3 Day measles."

Of course we never went to the doctor for anything unless there was considerable blood or misshapen limbs.

I don't remember getting chicken pox but obviously I did. When I went for my shingles shot they checked and I had the anti-bodies, so got the shot(s).

I don't know why this thread is here. Might as well offer that.

I started it because I got to thinking about how vaccines has saved our children from having to have the usual childhood diseases.

My grandmother told me about the flu in 1917's. Her grandmother traveled the neighborhood caring for families because she seemed to have a natural immunity. Several of her friends died. The cemetery near their family has many young children buried there. That's how we got on the subject. I commented about the number of headstones of children and the time period. (Elm Grove Cemetery at the corner of Army Post and Indianola Road.)

Note - I've self quarantined myself since Friday, March 13. Thought about the possibility of catching this after being in Kansas City and decided to stay put. I'm using Hy-Vee pick up and drive through for prescriptions and just wave at the UPS or other delivery person. I also live on a farm so I'm able to get outside and do things without having to have contact with anyone.

Yup, been there in the early '60's and did those. Peeps were more worried about polio back than. Old enough to remember a friend of my parents in an iron lung. Thing creeped me out with it's compressor noise, as if the thing itself wasn't physically freaky already to a little boy.
