Is the cat peeing in the litter box? Is it older?

My cat started doing this when he got older. But he was like 18-19 years old at the time and his hips were failing and I think he couldnt balance well and was afraid he would tip over in his box and that it may have happened to him. Thankfully i discovered that he would go on newspapers if next to his box.

I have hears of some cats having this issue younger as well. You could try a very big open flatter homemade litter box. Some cats are also turned off by clumping litter. U could also talk to your vet about it.

Agree with others once a cat starts pooping elsewhere there probably isnt a quick fix.

Get a new litter box or wash the old one throughly. The cat might be able to stll smell the old litter. We have 3 cats, that is the first thing I would do and then I would take them to the vet.

2.) make sure there is one litter box per cat plus one. One cat = 2 litter boxes, 2 cats = 3 litter boxes.

I don't buy this one. Anecdotal of course, but I know many people who have one or two cats (including myself for many years), and none of them use multiple litter boxes, and there are no problems.

I could see it being necessary if there is an agressive cat or in the case of a problematic cat, but not as a general rule. Sounds more to me like some "guideline" designed to help a particular industry sell more product.
