Bill Fennelly

That's a fair plan.
He’s not staying after next year. Will be a complete rebuild and likely a big down year. I do think the Carlisle gal is a difference maker that will give as a nice change of pace player. Just hope they let her play and not try and over coach her.

Reasons to believe this, which have been discussed but I'm reiterating here :
  • His contract expires in 2027 and there's been no buzz about extending it
  • He gets a hefty retention bonus in 2027
  • There is massive roster turnover after 2027 due to the large number of juniors on the roster
That doesn't necessarily mean he couldn't change his mind for whatever reason or if circumstances warranted (say, if Audi had to take a medical redshirt in 26-27 and he wanted to stick around one more year with her). But it certainly points to the current plan being retirement after the 26-27 season.

You can rebuild from the portal pretty quickly, but he'd need to retire as soon as possible after the season so we could hire a new coach ASAP and hit the portal right away. I imagine JP would be working behind the scenes to get that transition done as quickly as possible.

Bill's retention bonus doesn't kick in until June 30, 2027, but as has been mentioned before I'm sure they could come to a deal where he retires a few months earlier and keeps the bonus.

If I'm Kenzie Hare, why would I stay? This staff has done nothing to enhance her game. I feel bad that her role is simply "stand on the wing and watch Bill's three favorite players try and maneuver the opposing team and lob it to Audi for the 79th turnover of the game"
There's "dance with the one that brung ya" and then there's just a refusal to have more than one play in the playbook.

Its been that way for years with all the star players. Run the one play over and over and over and over... and in crunch time, the star player gets crunched, and they lose.

I don't see Jamie and Bill working out anything together. The rumblings around the program have suggested a rift around Billy taking over for 5 years now.

I feel the best short-term answer is Bill making staff changes. Him set back and be the CEO and let someone else come in and run their offense at the least. He has 2 maybe 3 top tier players in this team. He has had 2 other top tier players the last 8 years and very little to show for it.

I can speak to the "carlisle gal". She is everything you want a PG to be. Really good ball handler, can get to the rim, makes her FTs and can hit the 3. Her basketball IQ is really high and she is on the Iowa Attack top team so she has traveled the country playing against top competition.

The only thing she cares about is winning. She average right around 20 points a game but that could have easily been 30 if she wanted to and the team wasnt blowing other teams out.

Here is a tidbit for you-Fennelly asked one of her family members at a game if she was left handed because she goes left flawlessly and can score. She is right handed.

No one really knows how many offers she received because thats not her or her families style. They are really REALLY great people and just dont feel the need to "brag" or put out such info. Guessing Macy was in the low teens with offers though. She is a talent and will be a fan favorite.

No one taking a job for a head coach that is a short timer unless they are promised the head job when he leaves. And that never happens or works out.

in what world is Uconn a comp to isu?
It’s about continuity and what it does for a program. The ***** and moaners never comment when things are going well and come out in droves to gripe about anything they can grasp at related to the perceived failures of the staff. The latest ludicrous one that I responded to is that somehow the assistants are terrible because they have stayed at ISU and aren’t wanted elsewhere. So, to answer your question…does the same logic apply to the UConn assistant who hasn’t left to become a head coach after 40 years?

The only scenario there I can see there would be Wyoming HC, Heather Ezell. She has been fairly successful at Wyoming until this season where she is 10-19 overall, 7-13 in MWC play.

I would much rather see after next season a comprehensive HC search (assuming Bill returns for one more season) that would include candidates outside of Bill's tree.

My biggest gripes about coach are that he'll stand there with arms folded and want the team to "figure things out on their own" too much.
Hope you aren't one of the same critics that didn't like it when he would get red face and start screaming directly at players when they messed up too because there has been plenty said about that as well. The Nikki Moody lawsuit had some people here saying Bill was too harsh with his demeanor and such. If you would go back and watch how he handled things in the early 2000's compared to today his courtside demeanor is night and day as I remember him screaming and very animated at times earlier in his career. It's such a fine line these days because if athletes think a coach is being too hard on them they just transfer out.

I'm not saying Bill isn't at fault in some aspects to how this team has performed the past 2 years, the coaching staff carries responsibility for that as do the players too. These are D1 athletes playing in a power conference, so they also carry some of the blame for the performance. It is going to take a combination of both some adjustments by the coaching staff and the players executing better if they are ever going to reach their potential that we know they are capable of.

When were things going well this year? When we won 7 of 8 against a bunch of bad teams in the back half of conference play? The reality is our non con was pathetic and then we got exposed against Baylor in early Jan. The Big 12 was not a good league this year, going 10-8 is pathetic for this program, with or without Brown.

Honestly, I will be kind of shocked if Addy stays. She has regressed due to her lack of usage which is freaking crazy. She has one shot left, why would she waste it in this system?
regressed? How?
25-26
28 min, 44% shooting (198 attempts), 36% three (70 attempts), 79% ft, 12.2ppg, 9 boards

24-25
32 min 48% (396), 36% three (127), 76% ft, 15.2 ppg 8 rebounds

23-24
33 min, 47%(346), 38%,l(134), 74%, 13ppg 8 rebounds

Looks like remarkable consistency by the player to me

Her lack of usage? She took 14 shots yesterday. She hasn't regressed, she suffered a major injury and hasn't regained her form. She was getting plenty of usage early in the season when we were undefeated, in the top 10, and she was being discussed as an all american.
It's not a knock on Addy, it's a knock on the system. Yes, she's getting shots up but that's not the point. Her best stretches are when Audi's not in the game and the paint opens up some. When Audi's in the game Addy can't play her game and it sucks that our staff can't recognize that at all. You HAVE to move Audi around and if that's to demanding physically, our S&C program has failed miserably.

If you can't see that our system is holding her back I don't know what else I can tell you. It's not just about the stats.

This is where I am at too. This is too good of a job not to have a pool of qualified candidates with HC experience interested when the time comes to hire the next coach. Just like all our other recent hires I am sure JP already has a list in mind when that time comes that he can act quickly on it. There are a lot of routes we could go with the next hire depending on if the AD thinks we can open up the purse strings a bit more for a known commodity but given the budget challenges I doubt that happens. I just feel that after the 26-27 is a perfect time for all involved to be able to do a complete reset with the WBB program with the planned roster attrition that is coming with this current junior class. Maybe that is not soon enough for some of the critics but probably the more ideal timeline given what is at stake. If Ezell is even in the mix as a possibly candidate would give another year to see what direction her WY program is headed after a down year. I just think it is in everyone's best interest to let Bill finish out his career with Audi's class then start with a clean slate in all aspects. If you make the change now most of this roster probably transfers out I bet because most likely came here specifically to play for Bill.

I'm sure I've been critical of him in the past but all I'm saying is lately it seems to be more of a "ladies, you can figure this out without me" vibe.
I get that same vibe with timeout usage sometimes after teams have made huge runs.

Bill is a great coach, I just want him to verbalize a few things better.

I'm agnostic on the original beef, but to answer the question, yes, it's different.

Bill is not a great coach and his pouting on the sidelines is not a "lately thing"...he has been doing it for years. There is a reason our teams always fade when adversity hits...he doesn't coach. He is a salesman...and he has been selling his same fake wares for way to long.
