Best BBQ Sauce

I'm pretty certain this is the company that will sell you "self-label" products, so you may see the same "Vidalia Onion Fig Sauce" sold in 100 different retail shops across the country with their logo in place of the Stonewall label. When we ran a retail store it was a popular trend, especially with their jams and dips. It still might be a good sauce!

I order it online by the case from Stonehill. Can't find it in local stores anymore.

Does anyone around here sell Alabama BBQ sauce? I've always wanted to try that

I like most bbq sauces as they all have their place. It all depends on what you are cooking, how you are cooking and when you are applying the sauce. If I'm doing chicken and decide I want to glaze some sauce on it I like a thinner sauce with more vinegar flavor, but I don't like the heavy vinegar flavor if I am going to do a Texas style and dip in sauce or apply after the cook. For pork I like a sweet honey or sweet and spicy variety. Point being they all have their own place.

Definitely not an expert, but anything Stubbs is my #1. Kinders are good too, with 'Hot Honey' my favorite of theirs.

I've always thought Famous Dave's sauces are pretty solid across the board. Texas Pit is probably my favorite (it's somewhat similar to devils spit but less spicy) however it's less common to see on the shelf at retail. Sweet and zesty or whatever the purple label one is called is also decent as a mild/sweet option that's generally inoffensive for guests.

My go to recently has been Sweet Baby Ray's Sweet n Spicy, which may partly be laziness / ease of procurement. It has a bit more kick than their original but not a ton (our 2 year old was eating it regularly a few months ago) and works well for things like meatloaf, turkey burgers, grilled pork loin that are my main applications for BBQ sauce at home recently.
I'd say Famous Dave's is the best mass market sauce. Chef friend agrees.

I really like Deadeye but doesn’t seem like HyVee carries it anymore

I've seen it at the Grimes Hy-Vee recently I think. Will have to look next time I am there. Pretty sure Fareway has it. It's made by some Iowa State guys too. If you like a little more kick without it being too spicy the medium heat is pretty good.

I am not a big fan of the national brand sauces like Sweet Baby Ray's. I tend to grab a bottle of something I haven't tried before when I go to one of those stores that carry's some of the BBQ circuit or lesser know BBQ places. Each type of sauce has it's place for types of meats too. I love Gates BBQ in KC but their sauce doesn't pair with every meat IMO. Arthur Bryant's has a good sauce for beef but doesn't got great with pork or chicken.

I've found Three Little Pigs BBQ sauce pretty good and they have some different flavor offerings. On a more national level I do like some of Guy Fieri's sauces. They've changed up the offerings in recent years but he had a really good Kansas City sauce and Carolina #6 sauce that was vinegar based that went really good on pulled pork. Now he has a Smokin' Hickory that tastes like like KC sauce and I see he has a Sweet Carolina sauce that I have not tried yet to see if it is close to the original Carolina sauce or not.

My favorite is Joe's KC sauce, but it can be tricky to get in Iowa. I have a stock supply but my source dried up so I might need to investigate alternates.

SBR Honey BBQ is a mass-market staple that will never disappoint for me. I like using this for basting chops or ribs at the end of a smoke, especially since it's cheaper and I can save the "good stuff" for dipping.

One other I've really liked is Big Moe Cason's BBQ sauce, you can get these in Hy-Vee. The I-20 sauce has a hit of pineapple in it, and man is it delicious. There are two other flavors (I-80, I-10) and one of them is a more traditional sauce.

Seems kinda pricey. But you think it's worth it, eh?
Most of the small batch sauces seem to run in the $7-9 range so $10 isn't wildly out of line I don't think. Can catch it on sale at Fareway occasionally for $9. We also are not heavy sauce users so it lasts a decent while for us. It has the consistency of a vinegar sauce but is not extremely vinegar forward like some carolina sauces.

Usually make the trek over to Luther and get some Whacha Smokin' sauce.

I don't really care for BBQ sauce myself...prefer home made ranch.

Slightly off topic, but if you use Liquid Smoke for anything - the ONLY one I will use is Tones. All the others, at least the half dozen or so I've tried, are garbage.

They don't carry it at Hy-Vee anymore but I find it at Fareway.

My wife had a great uncle who was known for his BBQ sauce and it was really good. We asked him for the recipe and he actually gave it to it. The first ingredient was Kraft BBQ sauce. Yes, I know he jazzed it up and added spices. But the main ingredient in his BBQ sauce was . . . BBQ sauce.
Totally respect that. I do that most times as well. When I'm smoking pork shoulder or back ribs towards the end of the smoke I'll pour SBR Original into a bowl and put it in the smoker to pick up some of that smoke flavor. Then I'll add some garam masala to calm it down just a bit.
