Best 1 through 5 ever

A team that people probably forget about was the 2018-19 that won the Big 12 tournament, and then lost in the first round to a weak Ohio State team.

Shayok (NBA draftee)
Horton-Tucker (NBA)
Jacobsen
Wigginton (NBA)
Weiler-Babb
Halliburton (NBA all-star)
Cam Lard

Needless to say, we should have fired Prohm at halftime for wasting this much talent.

Their dysfunction was on full display in the Iowa game that season and then it was just kind of feast or famine, and the tOSU loss sucked but was far from shocking.

It was a 4 point game with like two minutes left and I just remember thinking 'yeah, they're not winning this'.

Nurse was also a senior and could shoot the lights out. Don't think I would take Shirley over Buchanan. Horton and Milan is a tough one. Horton was a dog and could also shoot the lights out. Milan is a lot bigger. Probably Milan.

Horton could play PG if Tinsley was out for any reason, and Nurse too. They all had a handle and could score from about anywhere.

Having that be your 1-3 isn't a lot of size but lots of skill and a tough matchup on both ends.

1996-97 is up there. Not much roster depth, but the common starting unit, damned tight:

Holloway
Willoughby
Cato
Bankhead
Pratt
Fun team but imagine the people on CF going crazy that we only have one 3 pt shooter in the starting 5.

The night ISU clinched the regular season title in 2000 they were behind at a terrible Texas Tech late before closing it out.

This place would have been struggling.

I'm as big of a Mike Nurse fan as there is, and this is no way a draw. At least in terms of potential and talent level.

Toure is 85% as tenacious as Nurse (which is absolutely saying something) and clearly more talented.

On defense he is better. Not on offense. Also this isn’t based on potential. This is 1-5 best lineup. Potential obviously toure has a higher ceiling

I go back to the 70’s and I don’t think we’ve ever had a better lineup 1-5. That includes the 2000 year and this year our supporting cast is better. If everyone stays healthy we can have a special year. Let’s go.
Was curious if a Toure meant anything in French, but I found this (his family is from the Ivory Coast he has said) :

Toure (or Touré) is a prominent West African surname and name meaning "strong warrior," "brave," or derived from a Soninke word for "elephant," common among Mandinka, Soninke, and other peoples in Mali, Guinea, Senegal, and Ivory Coast, signifying heritage, leadership, and resilience

“Strong warrior” checks out.

Dedric is my favorite Cyclone of all time. I tear up thinking about him.

Made 102 3-pointers at 45%. With the quickest release you'll ever see. Absolute perfection. The dude never stopped moving. 20ppg, clutch in every way, played great defense, and was the focus of the opponents game plan.

45% with 102 makes!!!

This thread is making my brain spin.
Let's yap end of season!
A lotta "developmental," between now and then.
That white Hawk dude (forget his name) is regarded as an All American.
He was utterly destroyed by FRESHMAN Toure.
Might have my stats wrong, but pretty sure he hit nuttin when gaurded by Toure

To be fair I think a lot of people consider Toure at least a defensive all American after his performances so far.

THT was selfish.

Dedric three point shooting incredible.

I also think his season of 102 makes at 45 % puts this years season for Milan into some incredible potential as well. He’s made 41 threes so far at 53%, shooting from a 3pt line that is moved back compared to Dedric. He’s on pace for something like 130 makes (obviously he will slow down once we enter big 12, but we’ve played a lot of real teams so far).

Nothing against the guys this year, but you play that elite eight game anywhere but the Spartans back yard that 00-99 team more than likely has a national champ banner hanging in Hilton.
Agree.....the other thing which still goads me to this day is the charge call-I still can't let it go. I hope the lost mojo of averages is brought back to the mean with this year's team.

One of the things that have been a constant with TJ's team's is they seem to hit a wall in February because he is such a task master in practice. Or so we are all told on this website.

That 00-99 team just kept getting better as the season progressed basically playing 6-7 guys with LE as a coach. I doubt TJ's practices are any more difficult.

So while the 96-97 and 13-14 teams should get consideration..........the 99-00 team set the standard.

Thanks, all ya'll, for this fun trip down memory lane.

My brain doesn't have the ability to remember such details, especially for sports! I remember having fun at the games, the wins and losses, and player's names. But details and stats? Not so much. Kudos to OP and everyone else - this has been a fun read.

As an English teacher, it can get in my way sometimes! I don't recall plot details or character arcs very well! I'm good when I've read and taught a text multiple times, but after one read? Eh...not so much! I work with a few teachers that are all "Well, Macbeth's motivation in Act 3 was ...blah blah blah." I'm like, "I've read Macbeth..." !! {shrug} {laughing/crying}
