Batemon shoutout

Kid is going to be fine. He's had some ups and downs this year which is expected for a freshman. Going into the Phog for the first time and playing well is another good sign.

I would start him over Toure. We can’t have two guards that don’t want to shoot alongside a timid Jefferson.
Jeff put up the 2nd most shots of every player including KU in the game.

How is that being timid?

By the way Lipsey had the most shot attempts, thought he played guard.

Your comments don't jive with stats.

I noticed he had his feet staggered on one of his three attempts but it still went in. Wondering if this was intentional or if he's just that good of a three point shooter.
His shot isn't always textbook form, but seeing that he hit 15 three-pointers in a row in the first half of a high school game tells me it's not preventing him from knocking them down.

Watch the game. Neither Jefferson or Lipsey are itching to shoot the 3. They will take it if they are wide open (which teams are giving), but they do not look like they want it. It creates a spacing issue when Toure's shot is almost non existent.

Lipsey had some terrible takes of his own making last night, too. Lots of long twos and lane floaters that turned into empty possessions. It got a little better in the 2H but was not sustained.

It's actually "jibe," not "jive." Jibe means "in accordance with." I suspect about 80% of us (Americans) get this wrong, including me until recently.

So they took 10 out 27 3'2. Both were well above their season shot average from 3 for the game.

For the game ISU was slightly above their average in 3 point attempts per game.

For the game ISU had more total shots than KU.
ISU was above their season average in shot totals per game.

The problem last night was not shot quantity.

They had plenty of shots. The problem was they only turned KU over 9 times and turned it over 12 themselves. And they could not stop KU on the defensive side.

Has ISU ever won a game against a quality opponent, where they lost the turnover battle?
Doubt it but could wrong...

KU hit 50% from 3

Lack of defense was ISU's biggest issue.
You get hit with 12 out of 24 from 3 you will lose 8 out of 10 times

That said Batemon deserves more time. No problem with that and his D is good

Actually I think jive is kind of like the F word it can be used as a noun, verb or adjective.. :-)

I think if used as adjective or a verb it does mean trying to make someone believe something that is untrue. But my sentence structure skills suck so I probably screwed it up.

You can see that Bateman is hungry for more playing time as he is taking coaching and getting better each game. He is sliding and anticipating better on defense and is trying to add getting into the lane and shots at the rim. He is less likely to hit the Freshman wall than Toure might. That should only help us later in this year's run.

He was considered the best or one of the best true shooters of the class and his recruit profile mentions his unorthodox shot. One of those natural ones you don’t mess with

We were exposed last night as the more slow-footed team . KU was quicker on blow-bys, close-outs, double teams, loose balls, and rotations. I think UConn typically has the really quick guards who can wreck any defense. Add to that our poor layup shooting, 3 point shooting, passing, and free throw shooting, and we had a perfect storm. Nelson and Batemon are getting closer in value to Heise and Toure.
KU really exposed us here. They did a great job of passing out of the double team and the guys trying to recover or rotate were getting blown by easily. Basically, the KU player that was receiving the ball out the double team, waited for the ISU player to commit to coming at them in the rotation, and they used that body momentum forward to their position against them to blow right by them. It was either a free lane to the basket or if help stepped in a pass to where the help came from.

I'd say the same about Toure. He had a handful of big hustle plays. Kept a couple of Jeffersons errant plays alive in the 1st half even if they still ended up leading to nothing.
Agree, I was about to post the same thing. Seemed like the veterans put too much pressure on themselves trying to win the first game in nine years. Toure was his usual intense, hustling self and so was Batemon. I like how he plays defense with his feet, not his arms/hands. He puts his body right in front of the ball handler. Reminds me a bit of Maury John's belly button defense other than John had his players have their hands up as well. (Johns coached at Drake and then at ISU.)

batman's one of my favorite players, not necessarily cause he's the best player on the court, but he's got that cyclone mentality
