Virginia is going to struggle quite a bit now that the shot clock dropped down to 30 seconds. Tony Bennett has done a tremendous job at UVA, but he took major advantage of the 35 second shot clock. Dropping it down to 30 is going to make it a little tougher for him to make a game plan. If Nichols wants to be a high-flying offensive guy then he made the wrong choice by picking UVA.

I think they will be just fine. They still have some very good players. And the shorter shot clock will result in teams taking quicker shots and more low-percentage shots as it winds down, which goes right in line with UVA's defense anyway.

People that specialize in creating borefest basketball aren't going to miss a beat with a 5 second difference.

...but him getting kicked out of TWO programs? Umm...

Fred could work wonders with some troubled personalities -- Royce, Kane, Allen, Lucious, etc., though not sure how into that Prohm is going to be, though Prohm seems to have gotten through to Matt Thomas, Nader, and Burton. Didn't work out so well with BDJ and Booker for Fred, either.

I would wonder how he got himself into such a situation.

Some of the predictions above about UVA's style/success are kind of funny after that rather heartbreaking defeat in Chicago a few months ago, too. :/

This guy is done playing college ball. DLeague.

Gary Parrish of CBS Sports take on Austin's future:

3. Nichols' future is up in the air

When the news broke, people immediately asked, "What's next for Nichols?" The answer is unclear. But after speaking to sources Friday night I'll be shocked if he ever plays another minute of college basketball and unsurprised if he never plays basketball again at any level. Truth is, whether Nichols actually enjoys playing has long been questioned by coaches who have worked with him and folks who know him well. He seems to be somebody who has played more because he's tall and good than because he's passionate about the sport. So a part of him probably feels unburdened by this development. Because no matter what, Austin Nichols won't be playing basketball any time soon, and that might be OK with Austin Nichols.

Parrish is from Memphis and usually seems very in touch with the basketball scene there, so he probably knows what he's talking about.

Kind of reminds me of the Greinke situation a bit.

I'd have to really hate hoops to not go get paid by the NBA if I was him.

It's pretty obvious they won't let him go through the motions at the college level.

I remember watching him at Memphis and he was very skilled and quite athletic for his size. You hate to see someone waste that kind of potential, but if basketball isn't his thing then I suppose it's a good thing he's moving on.
