Athletic Facilities across the Nation

Rice's Stadium was always way too big. I have been there a time or two for a game years ago and it was way outdated even then. As crazy as it sounds that stadium actually hosted Super Bowl VII back in the 70's when the Dolphins beat the Vikings.

It made sense back in the 50s when it was built. They filled it up regularly at the old 70k capacity in the 50s and 60s, and could even occasionally fill it up in the 70s when a bigger fanbase like Texas\TAMU\LSU helped fill it up.

Think he means the flat bleacher seats that are in the entire stadium
Would be incredible to rip those out and replace with actual seats, like in the Sukup End Zone
Yes, but that would mean they cant use it as a perk for clubs and suites. Would not gain whatever income they get from the cushions. And would be a huge reduction in capacity if we did not also add a substantial addition, like a 3rd deck, or completing the North Endzone.

Not to mention a very substantial cost for no actual financial gain and no need other than aesthetics, when the stadium is empty.

I doubt I see the entire stadium updated to stadium seats in my lifetime, and I hope I live a long time yet.

I could see the highest value seats in the lower bowl 50 yard area upgraded, and I could see them upgrade those sections to a club type level. For an even higher premium. But I doubt very much you will ever see the upper deck, and the corners upgraded in any way beyond the bleachers.

So, here we are, a university stadium costing almost $1 billion. What does this mean for fair competition, parity? The ability to spend awe-inspiring monies to tilt the playing field maybe 45 degrees to your advantage.

What have you won? Your victories are sewer-born. Will you take pride in your domination spewed with money from the anuses of your fat money people? Is that what the spirit of sport is about?

Wrestling. Weight classes. It is to match individuals in fair competition. Football looks like this: A 118-pound wrestler forced to take on a 285-pounder. You people take pride in such a mismatch?

Yeah they ripped out one of the enclosed endzones and tarped the other to reduce capacity from its high.

I think for a while the upper decks were tarped too, not sure if they are anymore. I swear at one time they said the upper deck was deemed unsafe, but I may have been thinking of somewhere else.

A stadium that big for a bad G5 program is not good, it worked back in the SWC with all the other local teams coming and the lack of NFL teams etc. Now they get less support than Houston and that is bad.

A well built stadium that is closer to the actual needed capacity will be a much better experience than a massive 3/4 empty stadium. And will look and feel better for everyone on game days.

Think I saw the Ryan Family was paying for the new stadium and Northwestern wont have any debt

I saw LSU play @ Rice in 1983. There were definitely more LSU fans than Rice fans. Have not been there since. Need to add it to the Retro Tour!

It is hard to believe that UT has been playing VB in Gregory Gym for so long. That place was built in 1930. From an outsider's point of view, it is a "dump". I am positive that Vic Schaefer wouldn't consent to coach in that facility. Lots of history/success has been made there & I'm guessing that the topic to move to a new facility has been very debatable. Early in the season the VB team played a match in the Moody Center.

Built for loud crowds even when they only hold 10k. Funny thing Carver was originally built that way so the sound was loud. Except they forgot that all the sound would escape because there were no walls to keep the sound inside

stadium designs have never been a real original craft. It like how all the new NFL stadiums are just carbon copies of each other. The vikings got that Translucent ETFE roof and now ever NFL stadium is getting a Translucent ETFE roof.

West Virginia is a copy of Jack Trice.
