My parents are likely moving to the Des Moines area, in their low 70s, and my Mom is a double amputee who would need help if my Dad ever ended up with problems. They're considering assisted living facilities, especially those that have varied levels of care depending on their needs. They wouldn't need anything beyond a townhome that takes care of the lawn and snow, etc right now, but would like a place where the transition to assisted living would be nearby and easier.

Anybody have any recommendations from experience with their parents or grandparents?

I recommend this guy:

There is a place in DM called Scottish Rite Park near 31st and I-235. Very nice but expensive; but most of these places are expensive. They have condo-like apartments with all sorts of amenities including diet, exercise, crafts, nursing care, etc. I hate to say it but once older folks start the slide down hill; many times it comes on rather quickly. If they find another place thinking they can get by without assisted living for awhile, it usually doesn't work out that way and they end up moving again anyway within a few years. It is really sad seeing parents/grandparents getting old.

In terms of experience with Scottish Rite, I know people who've been involved with them for many years. Its legit and they do a great job of taking care of their older citizens.

Good luck.

They're still doing ok, but are just being proactive. I'm an only child and they're alone in Illinois. If something happened to them in there, especially if my Dad wasn't able to care for mom anymore, it would be a disaster for them and us. I'm glad they're taking this step and not fighting moving.

In Pleasant Hill there's a place called The Shores that is very nice.

This is the high end of things. Likely geared toward folks from Glen Oaks and/or Des Moines GCC. Guess the prices?

$430,000 endowment to cover operating expenses. You do get 90% back on exit, but that's a lot of coin. And that doesn't include thousands per month in rent. Don't remember that exact price. Had to pick myself up off the floor first.

Senior Care's Guide offers a variety of resources that can answer their questions about what kind of facility to live in. They will also direct your parents to the right facility once they decide what type of care is best for them.

My grandparents decided to move to Scottish Rite for their last few years. It's a great place for various assisted living, from having push-to-call assistance in the apartment to full care facilities in the building if needed. The staff was very friendly and willing to help. I would recommend Scottish Rite to anyone looking for assisted living in Des Moines.

Looks like my parents have settled on Walnut Ridge in Clive. They looked at Scottish Rite but wanted to be closer to us in Johnston. It's quite nice with a lot of modern facilities and amenities. They're not going to use them much, but they have a very nice pool and workout facility.

MILLPOND in ANKENY....Mother has been there 8 years, she is 97, has been a good experience for her...best to visit several places first before deciding

My Grandma spent a few months there a couple of years ago. The place is incredible! It has a movie theater, sports bar, restaraunts, etc. I guessed it was expensive but didn't know the exact cost. A lot of married older couples lived there as well. They would sell everything and move in. I wanted to move in after seeing it.
