Listening to FART podcast, and seeing other comments in various threads, people were wanting to know what ISU 3rd down and 4th down play breakdowns were. I was bored at work and decided to get the raw data. I haven't done much data interpolation, but in just doing this ISU threw the ball a lot of 3rd and 4th down...regardless of distance.

Very impressive - thanks for posting. I'm sure our opponents compiled such a list; no doubt it's good scouting info.
 
Now, what about opponent's plays on 3rd and 4th downs? There were some daggers this season.

On 4th and less than 2, they went 3/8. Only 2 of those times did they try passing it and got neither of them. That's more of an indictment on how bad the OL is and they lose 4 starters. Great.

They still need to put in a QB sneak or some variation of it. Have Purdy go under center, stand up and change the play, and while he's changing it, direct snap it to Hall. Something, anything, please.

So when ISU got a first down from 3rd or 4th down, only 11 came from running plays. 46 came from pass plays and 1 came from a penalty.

Holy ****, the OL is terrible.
 
WOW! Those are some telling stats. Only nine successful rushing first downs and 4 of those were runs by Purdy. So only 5 times ALL YEAR were we able to hand the ball off to a running back and gain what we needed to move the chains on third and fourth down. That has to change or our offense will never be anything close to elite.

Edit: Syncing my numbers with Hoggins' post. 11 rushing first downs but one came off of a penalty and the other a forward fumble.

Edit #2: I should have been more thorough. Thanks to Daserop's hard work it is now obvious that the running backs gained 12 first downs or touchdowns.

Bolded possessions with 1st downs, TDs, & 1st downs due to penalties. I didn't bold 1st downs which were then called back due to an ISU penalty.

Stats are skewed by having such fine tight ends this year, as well as Jones. Those guys were some fine 3rd down options.
