If a steak is done properly, no sauce, but if it is a terrible cut and tough, or overdone, A1 is my go to. I also put it in my hamburgers (yes in them. I put seasonings and sauces into my meat mixture prior to cooking). I also use some in my jerky marinade.

I don't like either of those sauces. In a pinch (overcooked or leftovers) I go with bbq sauce. You can put bbq sauce on just about anything and it will taste ok.

Fine. So are you ever invited to friend or family events where someone else is running the grill and they screw up? Or do you just take over like

I have trust issues when it comes to my steak. I cook it myself. It's better for everyone this way.

I honestly can't remember the last time I had steak that I didn't cook myself. I'll never order steak in a restaurant because that's just asking to be disappointed.

Yeah, for sure. Especially for restaurant steak prices, i usually lean away from restaurant steak. Why pay such a premium on something they so often don't do all that great a job at?

I've become a big fan of cooking steaks sous vide (which is a great option for all meats, tbh). An hour or two cooked at 129, seared for a minute or two with pan\torch\grill. Comes out perfect.

A good steak doesn't need sauce, but sometimes a bearnaise or au poivre or just a simple reduction is a nice change of pace.

I don't really use A1 for anything, but I don't mind Heinz 57 on a burger.

Wow. A.1. killing it so far. Something must be wrong with my taste buds. Surely someone else out there thinks it tastes like putrid cat piss...

A-1 is okay is beef stew. Never cared for it as a steak sauce. Might be better if it wasn't so runny, but it has a pretty sharp taste, like maybe it has vinegar in it???

I definitely like Heinz 57 better. One thing that I don't understand about both of those is why are they so darn expensive? Seems like a 10 ounce bottle is $5 or so. Seems like a lot for glorified ketchup.

When I was living in the dorms, dining services would occasionally have steak for part of a meal. The steak was so tough and dry, you had to soak it in steak sauce just to eat it. By the time I would sit down to eat, all of the steak sauce bottles were empty with other students doing the same.

A1 and Heinz (as well as most barbecue sauces that I am familiar with) have some type of cider vinegar in them. I agree that A1 has a certain bite that I just don't care for at all.

A good steak doesnt need sauce and should be great on its own.

That doesnt mean a sauce might not still taste good with a good steak, but that's all personal preference.

This is the correct statement. I've certainly used steak sauce on a restaurant steak that was overdone and it makes it bearable. Also, if available a Bernaise sauce pairs pretty well with beef. Not sure if that falls under item 4, let me know if I need to educate you.

It was my understanding there would be no French words.
lol. It's definitely fu-fu, but that doesn't make it less delicious.

Go to Django in Des Moines and order the steak frites with bearnaise if you don't believe me. I'm not going to make some outlandish statement like it's the best steak you'll ever eat, but it's a damned fine meal that holds up against just about anything.

Recommendation: Buy store-brand. Same stuff, less-expensive.

For most situations, I don't think it's worth paying "premium" price for condiments.

Bernaise is the bomb (see my earlier post), went on a cruise 10 years ago that had a beef filet with bernaise as a standard option and its all I ate for a week.
