.

I’ve gotten into a weird habit of naming the offensive formation and checking to see who’s on the LOS before every play. During the play I usually watch the ball... maybe keep an eye on a specific player or two here and there

This title is a bit odd, I'll admit, but a coworker asked me this today and I didn't have a good answer other than "the ball".

During a play, I watch the ball. Yet I hear people talk about linemen who played well on a play or a LB out of position. How do people see these things if they're watching the ball? Is there a specific position group you watch?
I mean if it's a pass play, I look around to see if anything is happening until the ball is thrown. Running plays, I just watch the ball.

First watch is always the ball. If I'm rewatching a game or rewind an impressive play I'll watch how things develop or different areas when things start to develop.

When we're on offense and it's early in the game I watch the OL play. I just want to get an idea of how things are going to go up front, that'll tell a lot about what kind of success the O might have that day. I also watch the opposing team's LBs when we have the ball to see how predictable our ground game is and how much they're able to cheat to the right spot just before the snap. Sad but true.

When we're on defense I watch the opposing team's QB and our DL to see what kind of penetration they're getting.

I like watching the linemen on offense- they’re the gladiators in the trenches, the unsung heroes. They operate as their own mini-unit, working towards one goal together and it’s cool to watch a good line execute and dominate the dline. You can have all the great skill players, but without that line, the skill players are kept in check.

If their protection is good and they’re controlling the line of scrimmage, it’s a good day for the Cyclones. OU’s line is going to be tough, but I think our boys win this battle Saturday and let Brock and Breece go to work.

Usually depends on the game situation and the formations they’re in. On offense I generally watch the ball, or where I think the play might be headed, like if there’s three receivers stacked to one side I’ll probably watch them most of the play. And when clones are on defense I usually watch the d line and see how they are bringing pressure, and also Datrone Young when he’s in coverage.

I usually watch the guards first. (I was a linebacker in high school). After the guards I'll watch the backs, then the ball. Seriously. It was so ingrained in me I can't do anything else.

I watch the ball mainly, but when ISU is on defense I watch the d line a lot. I would also say I watch the game differently in person than I do on TV. It's just easier to see the whole field in person IMO.

Open receivers or routes opening up are so much easier to see in person that it's kind of incredible. The crowd tends to see and start to get excited before it even happens.

I grew up learning that the line was where everything starts so my eyes tend to watch that before anything else.

If I look beyond the identity of the uniforms I just get confused. Therefore I keep it simple and just let the crew at espn tell me who's good.

I usually watch the ball/QB by default. As the game goes on and some themes develop, I'll watch them - i.e. if we aren't getting good pressure on the QB watch the D line, if we are having problems running watch the Oline.

The last two years though, when we are defense I watch Rose and Eisworth. They make me happy. I think I would watch Isheem to but he is usually out of the picture but I don't want to miss him blowing somebody up.

Pre-snap I'm watching motions and looking to see who is an eligible receiver (making sure there are exactly 4 men in the backfield).

After the snap, I'm mostly watching the ball, but I also look around if it's a pass play for quick glances at who might be open.

Yeah definitely the ball first. Not sure how to describe it but then sometimes I’ll shift my attention to something else without really noticing it

The more successful we are in a particular game I start watching those players. Like if offense is blocking well, or defense is blowing up people, I try to focus on that a little more. Same applies to other team when they are doing well, but much less enjoyable.
