MLB: ***2026 MLB Season Thread***

Blackout rule change and a salary cap.

Absolutely insane there isn’t something put in for a salary cap. Especially with how rich some of these owners are and the luxury tax meaning essentially nothing to some of them.

That would also help the small market teams, they might be able to stay competitive longer.

Not to mention - with the draft lottery, there is no real benefit to tanking like the Astros did to get high draft picks.

Yankees finally amend their no beard policy.

The owners would love a salary cap, but everything I hear is the players would never agree to it. If that is the case then how did the NFL and NBA ever get a salary cap? Why did those players agree to it? Or did they have a choice? Baseball is probably due for a long lockout in a couple years and I fear it is going to be bad for everyone involved.

The players union refuses to even bring up the idea of a salary cap, because they currently benefit from the current framework. The league needs to share media rights, and have both a salary cap and salary floor, but they are still stuck in the past over the issue. Too many teams that are making the large bucks do not want to give up that advantage to the Royals and Pirates of the league.
Every league has blackouts but MLB should condense the size of theirs, Southern Iowa and Northern Missouri is way too far to be blacking out games out of St. Louis and KC.

The NFL basically destroyed the football players union during the last strike when they put on games anyway, and some of the better players crossed the picket line and played. From that point, the NFL had all the power. Every time there has been a lock out or strike in baseball, the game is hurt by its lack of being on TV. Lots more to do in the summer than the fall and winter, and since baseball teams play 6 or 7 times a week, instead of just once a week, it makes it easier to just find something else to do. Most fans do not begrudge football players for what they earn, because they tend to have a short career, take a physical beating and the money is not guaranteed. In baseball players can play for 15 to 20 years and have fully guaranteed contracts.

Yes, they all have blackout restrictions, but those blackout restrictions are completely different sport to sport. MLB makes no sense. It’s so dumb.

NFL says the game must be sold out, it's not hard to sell out 8/9 games a season compared to 81 home games. We always have lived in the Cardinals home area and got the games, but its still thinking people are going to drive down 5 hours to a game on a Tuesday night to watch a ball game. Shrink the black to within 50 miles or so of the metro area and that would solve baseballs problem with black outs.
My youngest lives in Dallas, he can get the MLB package but they block out the Ranger and Astros games, which he has no problem with as a Cards fan, I could see the Ranger games, but the Astros games are 4/5 hours away from Dallas, that is crazy.

The NFL has suspended their blackout rules for the last decade. They get it.

And how does it benefit baseball to have Iowa blacked out by 6 teams? We can’t watch 1/5 of the entire league. It’s insane.

It's a year to year agreement, but they also have anti-siphoning rule, so if the game is on local tv, that broadcast is used. Why are you fighting about it, MLB dropping their black out rule would be great, they do not agree with that idea. Take it up with them.

I’m not fighting about it. It’s just a discussion, adding more context. Sorry if it came off that way

I'm probably not even going to bother getting a MLB Yankee subscription this season. Seems half the team is headed to the IL. Couple weeks ago it looked like they need to trade away a starter (Stroman) and now they are a likely a guy short in a period of a week.

The poor Yankees. Can’t they just buy another $30M player. I feel so bad for you.
