I’d be curious if MLB is currently using the computerized system to grade how the umps are doing. Those consistently missing the strike zone should not be in the big leagues, and at least nowhere near the playoffs

If you have Angel Hernandez or Cuzzi behind the plate, you are gonna need about 15 challenges per game.

It would probably be based on the criteria that is in place to grade umpires. I know a guy who made it as far up the ladder as umpiring MLB spring training games. He talked about a 2-inch buffer zone (basically the width of a ball) around the top, bottom, and both sides of a zone. He would get credit for being correct for calling either a ball or a strike on any pitch in the buffer zone. The buffer zone for being correct was even larger for pitches that had extreme spin rates. Umpires trying to break into the show need to be "correct" on at least 95% of pitches.

You could give Cuzzi some slack on call, but he gave up too early on tracking the pitch and didn't read the catcher's glove on the late tailing of the pitch. The 2nd one was no excuse. Cuzzi's mechanics are also crappy on the 3rd pitch. He sets up too high with his eye level at AK's shoulders instead of top of the strike zone. He doesn't stop moving his head long enough to accurately process the pitch. Then the biggest issue is that he calls the pitch way too quickly. Good umpires establish a tempo and rhythm that helps them make consistent calls. One of our local UIC's always taught beginning umpires to see the pitch, hear the pitch, call the pitch.

Expanding the zone on one side is bad enough, but then to call it on the other side is ridiculous. That's 4-6 inches he expanded the strike zone.

Clearly Cuzzi wanted to go home or hit a strip club and was running late.

Yeah, thats essentially what I'd like to see. Some type of buffer zone where the call stands as called on the field. Just trying to correct calls that are inside or outside that area.
 
Twins break a 11 game losing streak to the Dodger$ with another good outing by Ober. Gray going tomorrow to take the series.

Screw that. I don't know what good it would do (probably wouldn't) but man I hope Rocco and the FO are raising holy hell about this.
 
If you want to ensure the Twins don't score, Intentionally walk the 1st 3 batters. The Twins are TERRIBLE with the bases loaded.
 
Listening on the radio to this game just seems like everything is going wrong....and yet somehow still in it. Would be HUGE to win a series at the Dodgers. Get a day to rest then off to Anaheim.
 
Pagone back to form. Why he’s on the roster is beyond me.
Falvey hasn’t seen enough? Pagone needs to be DFA before they leave Dodger Stadium.
