2025 field work

First guy going on corn in my neck of the woods. Talked to a local seed dealers who said 100 day corn was either side of 20% depending on fungicide app if planted in that first April window.

Talked to a guy today running corn near Earlham. No fungicide and smoked by southern rust. Coming out at 160-180 and 16% moisture. Folks that decided to skip fungicide to save $40 better buckle up.
It doesn't always pay a lot, but it generally pays for itself if there isn't a ton of pressure (as long as you don't mind a little extra harvest moisture early). But this year the difference will be immense. And the places where the rust is bad the stalk rot will follow quickly. I had some cows get into a field with a rust problem and it was all falling over already with the slightest disturbance. The mantra this year is if it's brown send it to town. Do not wait.

This is my fear based on what I've seen scouting in our unsprayed fields. Quite a bit of corn that died around 1/2 milk line. Won't know for sure til the combine rolls but I suspect there will be some disappointing yields in unsprayed fields.

Given the amount of corn that appears to not have been sprayed it's also why I think l USDA and private estimates are quite a bit too high on their Iowa numbers

Based on what fields are looking like in the area at the moment. I didn't realize at the amount of guys who must have decided not to spray this year. a lot of stuff turning real fast. Bold move cotton, see if it pays off.

Lot of sprayed fields looking tough as well depending on timing, application method, product, and variety. Couple weeks ago it was very easy to tell sprayed vs unsprayed, much harder now.

Imagine chemical companies breeding for disease resistance.

Just saw my first growers combine running corn at Farson, Iowa. Based on the plot I just walked, everyone will be running next week in this area. April planted 113’s around 25%

USDA report on Friday. Do they drop yields, leave them the same, or raise them? I think they lower them a bushel per acre.
Pretty much on point, when half the crop is harvested then they will adjust when field reports reflecting confirmed yields. I expect a reduced corn yield that will increase price. Beans not so much. It was wet here until a month ago so the corn didn’t finish out and disease for non-fungicide is an issue. Beans will be OK but didn’t get the finish at the end either.

Carson Iowa ? Yup the early planted corn hopefully was far enough along to help not be hurt as bad.

There were a few farmers that waited to spray until it was too late.

Had some hand shelled today, one lot was 106 day, black layered, dead already with drooping ears. The other hybrid next to it was 109 day, upright and green, no black layer yet. Both were in the middle 30's for moisture. I was shocked. I thought for sure the dead corn would be 18% or under. Good news is, test weight on both should be 56+, a pleasant surprise.

One report from a seed company was corn rolling 145-165, high teens for moisture and 50# TW.

Heard something similar, maybe same company. Unsprayed for that bit of course

From the same source I also saw a compare and contrast of half a field sprayed vs not. Numbers for both were much better than the above numbers but there was a +30 bpa yield difference between what had fungicide and didn't have it. The product applied wasn't from the seed companies parent either so it wasn't a "buy our stuff" pitch.

No yield report with it but the local coop agronomist texted there was a some 102-105 day corn being harvested <20% as well.

Soybeans being picked in a small field inside Johnston city limits today.
Were they using migrant workers? I've only seen it done (soybean harvesting) by combining them, LOL

And don't ask me why you can pick corn with a combine, but not soybeans--which can be "cut" or combined.

Anyhoo, thanks for the report:)
