Spielman was the guy responsible for drafting Ponder.
Oh ok. I didn't know that. That was the first year I did a mock draft and I had Ponder going in round 5. I was pissed when the Vikings took him in round 1.

I just read that Anthony Barr is out for the season. We might end up with the #1 pick without having to trade up to get Trevor Lawrence.

Yeah, but the twin cities people were happy, because Sam showed up also.

He wasn't GM yet at that point but he was actually in charge of the draft that year and the two previous years I think.
His first round picks as GM:
2012: Matt Kalil, Harrison Smith
2013:Sharrif Floyd, Xavier Rhodes, Cordarrelle Patterson
2014: Anthony Barr, Teddy Bridgewater
2015: Trae Waynes
2016: Laquon Treadwell
2017: None
2018: Mike Hughes
2019: Garrett Bradbury
2020: Justin Jefferson, Jeff Gladney
At first glance, you'd probably think that's not horrible. But when you consider these are all first round picks, and the number of complete whiffs from 2013 on, I'd say it's time to blow it up.

You also have to look at position distribution. Picking a 1st round CB pretty much every other year for 9 drafts is inexplicable. Meanwhile they have been mediocre to hot garbage at ALL 5 OL spots for almost the entirety of this span, and they draft 2 OL in the first round.

Troy Williamson and Dimitrius Underwood would give Ponder a run for the award.
Troy Williamson was the absolute worst. The guy was simply bad at football. I would say he's a track guy, but you could randomly pick any sprinter and he could run better routes and have better hands. That was beyond an Al Davis level dumb pick.

Throw in a 5 year stretch (2015-19) where you get absolutely nothing out of your first round picks. Those chickens are coming home to roost now.

And don't forget trading a 1st round pick for Spam Bradford.

Looking at a list means nothing. Drafts in every sport lead to a lot of busts.

Now compare those drafted to other GMs and you get an idea. In a vacuum they mean nothing.

Not exactly sure.

Must be Jr. At first, I was thinking it was a sad comeback by a linebacker that is 40something or older.

Only interested in offensive minded coaches. League rules are currently pushing the importance of offense so we HAVE to go to way. Brian Daboll and Eric Bieniemy are interesting. Bieniemy would be great to have a head coach of color but how much of what KC does on offense is tied to Andy Reid?
