Exactly. No team wins many games giving up 40+ points. Vikings are paying for a ~20 PPG defense and not getting those results.
They screwed themselves cap wise last year. Resigning all 3 of Barr, Hunter, and Kendricks to big deals while still having Rhodes’ contract last year was poor cap management. Unfortunately they have largely ignored the cap on defense. Did what it took to get the best talent they could on defense regardless of cap. As for QB, you really have three options. Be terrible and draft a franchise QB, get really lucky in the draft, or overpay for a FA. They would have to blow it all up to be bad enough to get a top 3 pick.
Considering at the time they had a great defense, they went the FA route. At that time they were also really down to Cousins, Keenum, and Bridgewater.
So no matter what if they were going to do anything but tank, no matter which of the three they signed they were going to be left to scrounge cap space for OL and receivers.

The young Viking DBs were going to learn by fire going against one of the best QBs in their first game. Hunter being out made their job that much more difficult.
Always thought this would be and 8-8 type year. Just glad they got Cook signed. Keep drafting O-line as guys like Dozier and Elflein have no business starting.

At this point, tank for a new quarterback. I'd personally love Justin Feilds. Kirk Cousins is just awful. The GM needs to be fired for giving him an extension. Why are we playing Kirk $33 million a year to have a QBR of 0.00?
QB is irrelevant with this OL.

I'm not sure which HC I'd rather have right now. Not exactly a wide-open market at the moment, lots of teams taking big risks on unproven coaches.
I agree. But this team isn’t near where it should be with the time this staff has had to put one together and the resources they are using. It’s clearly not working and some drastic measures are warranted.

Or, more simply put, they suck ass and sh*t needs changing.

Time to blow up the roster. Hopefully we can tank for Trevor, but also would like Fields in a Vikings jersey. Fire Zimmer and bring in Eric Bienemy to work with the rookie QB. Kirk has essentially one more guaranteed year from the extension, so the rookie can sit behind Kirk and then either cut or trade him (if anyone would take him). It's going to be a long season

Do all this and keep Spielman around? What do you gain?
