1) Please give me the names of some great head coaches, past or present, in DI CFB that were born/raised in Iowa?2) Since Rhoads was born/raised in Iowa, I would like to know who he cheered for as he was growing up...ISU or the hawks?Anyone that can help with these questions...I greatly appreciate it. Thanks.
 
Answer to Q2: Does it matter? With the emotion he showed yesterday for getting the job, I couldn't care if he cheered for the Hawkeyes growing up, because he sure isn't one now!
 
These are two questions that I am honestly curious to know the answer to. With respect to Q1, I can't think of any but I freely admit that I really don't know. With respect to Q2, I read several posts on here yesterday from people that have had some sort of contact with his family...live next door, coached by his father, etc...again I am curious...being a resident of Iowa until I was 23 years old, it was my experience that the vast majority of people either picked the Clones or the hawks to root for.
 
Q1 is an interesting question as I would want to know whether there has ever been an opportunity like this to hire a successful coach at ISU with Iowa roots. I don't believe in the last 40 years there has been an opportunity like this.

By successful, I am referring to his coaching as a DC at Pitt and Auburn

Thanks...glad to hear it! As for the first question, either no one knows or there is no one...which means Rhoads will be the first great CFB head coach that was born/raised in Iowa.
 
I think you're right - I can't think of a single D1 coach from Iowa.

We've got a couple of MLB umpires - one pretty notorious for a blown call in the World Series.

He coached at Iowa...I was asking about great CFB head coaches that were born/raised in Iowa and to this point no one can name one. I'm pretty sure Alvarez was not born/raised in Iowa.
 
Chuck Long is from Wheaton, IL (IIRC). But he's not a HC anymore and didn't do anything great.

I don't recall where the Stoops brothers came from (heritage, not playing days), but don't think it was Iowa.

Where is Bielema (sp? - Wiscy coach) from? Certainly hasn't hit the
"great" level yet in any case.
 
Interesting.... Most of these guys we're listing are from an area of the country that Rhoads reportedly has strong recruiting connections in - and are traditional Iowa recruiting areas. Just an observation.
 
Marv Levy maybe? Not sure he's an Iowa boy but coached at Coe I believe.

Edit: Sorry. After re-reading your original post I realized you were talking about D1 coaches. I don't think Marv ever coached at D1 level.

Elmer Layden (Davenport) was Notre Dame's head football coach from 1934-40. He had a .770 winning percentage. He was one of the "Four Horsemen" in his playing days there.
