#2 Iowa State @ #5 Missouri

No, I was thinking of Max. He was a freshman the year his brother was a senior. They both were ranked #1 at their weights and Max was getting comparisons to Sanderson as he was undefeated going into the match with Backes. Kurt manage to pin him when Max thought he was manuevering for a pin himself. Backes went on to get second at the NCAAs that year and Max has not been the same since.

Backes lost a tight match to Josh Glenn from American in the finals

Nice win for Z

On the gametracker I noticed that MU left the Hw as TBD until the match. I know Bradley his back-up is a very good wrestler himself. Did they do that just to try to get into Z's head or were they intending to protect Ellis' #1 ranking if they had clinched the win by that match? May have backfired on Ellis.

Shows you how CRAZY Wrestling is.

Backas goes from placing 4th at the Big 12 Tournament to Almost winning a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP, 2 weeks later. WOW. That is crazy.

I just hope ISU can put it all together for the NCAA Tournament.

Seeding guesses anybody?
The only guy I can think of that might won't get a top-3 Big 12 seed will be Duke Burk. Fanthorpe might get stuck in the fourth- or fifth-seed, since he hasn't finished a conference match - other than the National Duals win over Nebraska's Vacanti.
Mueller is 3-1 in the Big 12, counting his OT win against Sanders. Clark would be a three if he beats Nebraska's guy again. Cyler would be a three, probably, unless he turn things around against Jordan Burroughs.

By the way, Cael said that Fanthorpe would wrestle today. On Friday night, he said something to the effect of "he'll go on Sunday. For real this time."

Fanthorpe has been working out, but I don't how bad his quad really was/is.

I think he was hurt, because they've been planning on going with Ellis. No confirmed story on that, though. I don't know if Takedown Radio had anything on that, but I couldn't tune in on Friday.

Their wrestle-offs have been competitive from what I've heard.

Bradley was the #1 heavyweight in the country his senior year at Blue Springs High. Not suprising he is puching Ellis. Wonder if Thompson will do the same for Z next year.

The MU Backup actually beat Big Z at the Midlands this year. Not sure what happened there, but he is very good. Looks like MU is going with Ellis for the rest of the year. BIG win for Big Z, he should get the #1 seed in the Big 12's.

Ellis will have to wrestle Rosholt in the Semi's. Last years National Champion (Rosholt) vs the Current #1 Ranked wrestler (Ellis), but BIG Z will Should be the NEW #1 RANKED HWT.

Way to GO BIG Z.

Here's a story I wrote about Zabriskie this week.
The Lore of Z
There's a couple of writing dumb mistakes in there, but there's some good info.
I wanted to write a bigger story, but we didn't have enough space in the paper. Some of the things I left out, but I might try to put up somewhere [I've got audio interviews that I can post onto a blog, once I figure out how to embed the files... I'm in a video production class, and I'm going to try to do a couple video interviews in the next couple weeks, and then a bunch before the NCAA Tournament].

Writing a story can be an inefficient way of conveying all that content. Here's some of key stuff I left out:

-Five of eight 2008 All-Americans have graduated. The other three are Oklahoma States Jared Rosholt, Zabriskie and Wisconsin's Kyle Massey.
-Zabriskie works out in the off-season with guys that do strong man competitions. Zabriskie sent me a picture of him doing the 550lb farmer's walk.
-He never played football -- just began wrestling because of some friends. They stopped, but he kept on going through high school. He didn't start until his sophomore year, then lost in the first round of districts, which "made [him] pretty angry."
-Interviews with Cyler, Les Sigman; a bunch more stuff from Zabriskie, Cael and Varner

Anybody else suprised at this result? Cyler beat Chandler, 9-5, at Midlands, which I was unable to see. Gallick had been on a roll - 15 or 16 match winning streak.

Yes, it especially worries me this late in the season. Not necessarily that we lost the meet but the individual losses.

The way Gallick handled #9 Cleveland from UTC by major, I am very surprised with this result. Hoehn has given Gallick fits in the past, but I thought Gallick was on another level this year.

Not surprised at all by Cyler losing. Chandler is very tough. I was more surprised by Cyler beating Chandler by 4 at Midlands...

Cleveland spanked Hoehn last year too. I thought there might be some transitive power out of all that, but hey... By the way, anyone watch the Iowa-Minnesota dual?
Keddy got pushed to the brink Minnesota's new 84-pounder. I tuned it halfway through. Morningstar and Borschel looked pretty tough.

Beatty had a bit of a scare at 197 too. Very close to a TD on edge of mat in 3rd period for the Minny wrestler.

#8 Freshman Zach Sanders beat #4 Senior Charlie Falck at 125

Minnesota's young but real solid in the lower weights. Looks to be a close dual Friday night. By the way, why isn't this on Mediacom right now? The Duke-BC basketball game is on Fox Sports Midwest right now. Supposedly the wrestling meet was supposed to be playing on tape-delay right now.
