16 team playoff this year

If there was a 16 team playoff where the 10 conference champs get a bid and then the next 6 highest rated teams get at large bids, Iowa state gets in with one team behind them (Indiana) and the seeding is probably the #10 from the committee.

We'd be looking at a first round game with Florida...tough draw but it'd be pretty fun.

I favor an 8 team playoff with 5 P5 champs, highest Gof5 champ and two at large (which we'd have missed with only Florida and Georgia missing in front of us), but this might have been the only year of the modern era we'd be safely in a 16 team playoff no matter how you designed it.

I don't think anybody would. ISU as 10 seed is just where committee ranks us.

If it was 8 teams with the 5 G5 champs you could probably seed conf champs first and it wouldn't matter that much.

With 10 champs you'd have UAB, Ball State and San Jose State seeded higher than #3 Notre Dame and #5 A&M so I think in that scenario all the teams would need to be seeded rather than champs first.

I think you still get Bama/Clemson in the final, but they beat aTm and OU to get there.

As a football fan I love the idea of a 16 team playoff, but there's no way they would ever do it with the G5 champs getting in. Way more money opportunities

I'm in favor of 8 but this was the season to try even 16 with less logistics/crowds and the bowls feeling even more watered down than before.
 
G5 champs shouldnt automatically get a bid. Make sure there are some criteria (rank, oppenents played/beat, SOS?) they have to meet first.
 
Here’s a "tiered" version of a 16-team field, something I developed a couple of years ago.** Involves double-bye for top 4 and bye for 5-8, with auto-qualifiers. Here's how 2020 would look in that format:

Fun concept for sure, but there is zero chance you could convince anyone to add up to 5 games for a team that would go on a run from the Opening Round all the way to the title game. That's insane. Even the 4 games for a team in the Second Rd is likely too much.

I agree with your 8 team structure.

IMO a 16 team playoff format is practical only if conference championship games are eliminated. I believe they are too big a money maker for the conference office to be eliminated.

8 teams is ideal. It makes each regular season game relevant. Look no further than the ISU v Louisiana.

Awarding each P5 champ an automatic berth and giving the highest rated G5 team the 6th berth.

The last 2 berths would be at large, but one issue I see is conference championship game losers could be at a disadvantage v. teams that didn't play in a conference championship game. AKA ISU vs. Indiana.

Agree, that’s a definite flaw for the concept. But I also figure the odds of a team advancing more than two games beyond its seeding is extremely low.

I have a 12-team tiered version that would involve either extra play-in for the lowest 4 league auto bids OR takes only the top 8 auto qualifiers and 4 at-large. I don’t have a sample prepared but it’s simple to visualize extrapolating from the 16 version

Also to reduce the too-many-games problem, probably would need to cap number of regular season games at 11 and no longer allow FCS opponents ... and doubtful that’d be acceptable for revenue.

Yeah last weekend when the B1G added games just to have more games and going through with these bowls is proof enough of how important it is to have that viewership.
