I saw what Larry said and I think he might have backed it up with some participation numbers. I feel like participation and popularity are two separate things. What I think really matters in this conversation from a college perspective is the viewership numbers for those sports and I would guess that wrestling runs away with it.....but I really don't know that for sure.100% agree with Larry on this.
They brought in that kid from Gilbert a few years ago.Interesting to me that they really don't recruit any of the top in-state talent. The last few classes have had some really good runners, this year's senior class as well. Kids at Oregon, Colorado, Arkansas, Kentucky, etc and Iowa State doesn't really appear to be recruiting any of them. Just relying on the international kids.
Yeah...he may have had an in...They brought in that kid from Gilbert a few years ago.
How do you know they don’t recruit them? Because they end up at other schools?Interesting to me that they really don't recruit any of the top in-state talent. Look on a map between Minnesota and Missouri; you'll find it.
Iowa hasn’t really been relevant in XC for years. I guess I am a little surprised they aren’t too 25, but not really.
I coached one of the recent top kids in the state (more a top track kid than XC kid) and my son is a returning all-state kid who is already accepted to ISU but hasn't even acknowledged as a potential walk-on, zero contact. So first hand information on their recruitment. Anecdotal knowledge of the recruitment of others. But at end of day, with success ISU has in XC, if they were trying to recruit any of these kids they would likely get one or two of them. How do you know they don’t recruit them? Understood. In looking at the current roster of 16, 2 are from Iowa, 3 from Africa, and the rest are from other states.
