Sad, he was one of the regional faces of MLB back in the WGN days.
I would not have guessed he was 65 (or just can't fathom that his playing days were that long ago).

As with many others, Ryne Sandberg was a huge part of my childhood. WGN, Harry Caray, Steve Stone and Ryne Sandberg. Appointment television for me when I got home from school.
Cancer sucks.

I've never been a baseball guy, but I knew Ryne Sandberg growing up, largely because of WGN. I have some sort of limited edition card of his from the early 90's in a protective case. Almost certainly not worth what my childhood mind assumed it would be worth, but it was the only card I had that I deemed valuable. RIP Ryno.
Nothing better than watching WGN in the basement back in the day when it was a scorcher out.

I saw Ryne Sandburg this spring in a sports card shop in Indianapolis. Him and his wife were there with their grandson. Other than the store workers, I don’t think many people recognized him or if they did they just respected his privacy. I did not see one person approach him other than the shop owner. He was allowed to just be Grandpa that morning in a busy sports card shop. His wife sat next to me looking through a box of old baseball cards for players she knew. He told her he was looking for cards of his past coaches when they were players. His Grandson was so excited to have them both in the shop with him. You could just tell he was a genuine and quality person. I’m sad today because that little boy lost his Grandpa.
Being his age, I often wonder about my own mortality. We take so much for granted in life. And, then poof, for many, it's suddenly over. As a kid, I of course was a fan of the generation just before him, but I never wavered from being a fan of him as I exited my teens. In those days, before the trade explosion, dedication, attitude, and persistence were the qualities which endeared Chicagoans. He did seem to have a good life which I hope is his own treasured legacy.
