Judge OK's $2.8B settlement, paving way for colleges to pay athletes

All athletes from 2016 to present will get paid. Did I read this right?

Will they pay into IPERS?

How will this eventually affect ISU? So athletes will be paid by the university - employees. Iowa State and much of the P3 and 4 conference members still do not have near the money as anyone in the P2, and the gap compounds and widens every year.

How will this change the current inequity? Will there ever be a type of profit sharing and or payroll caps like in the NFL?

I would like to see the formula they use to determine each athlete's VALUE. If all athletes are getting paid, I wonder what walk-ons get simply for being part of the team. Some are more valuable and do more than scholarship athletes.

I don’t love a baseball guy being tapped for this. Baseball has a ton of issues right now

How does this keep a billionaire from still paying a bunch of superstars to come play basketball or football for his/her favorite team through true Name/Image/Likeness money?

Supposedly Deloitte will monitor the value of NIL deals for each athlete. So one school wouldn’t be able to out bid for a particular athlete as their value will be the same regardless where they play. Doesn’t mean that a bunch of superstars couldn’t all go to the same school; but the playing field should be a little more level as players won’t be incentivized to chase dollars.

Personally, I have little faith in Deloitte being able to manage and determine an athletes NIL value that doesn’t correlate to a teams historical success, especially at the blue blood level. I think we’re going to see the same correlation of an ADs revenue/budget to success as we do in NIL value.

That's not the problem, pretty sure they're plenty capable of doing the job. The issue is someone is going to sue over this and I don't see how that holds up.

At this point , I would be ok if robots were developed to take over playing the game. Then the targeting, hands to face, taunting, roughing the passer, injury delays, substituting can all be eliminated.

Kinda like the fox being in charge of the chicken coop?

Injuries would be a thing of the past. Simply insert next clone-robot. LOL

So, in other words, no equity. Schools will have to pay athletes (past and present) at least 20.5 M/year, and NIL continues, probably unabated. The "enforcement arm" for the allocation of monies to the players will likely be 'all lime and salt and no tequila'.

The rich will continue to pay their way to the top. Congress passing antitrust exemptions should help, but I don't see how the Big 12 or ISU can thrive in this environment. The only significant rules will benefit the haves, the schools who have most of the money.

What a country. The only way ISU survives is if the Iowa Board of Regents supplements our athletic department and school. Iowa will want equal time /pay from the State, but do not need as much, if any, to survive, under the current media deals. That will not go over well.

How do others see this in one to two years? Does ISU continue with big time college athletics, or is that going to be a thing of the past?
