Really excellent pod. Honestly one of my favorites I’ve heard from CF. I think you both offered very honest, nuanced views. This was clearly a tough conversation, and I think some of the stories about personal change were really important to share.

Also, shut up and listen seems to be about the best message I’ve heard for white america at this point.

2. The last thing good citizens should do is shut up. Yes, ALL of us should listen to one another, but what's needed is conversation, empathy and candid discussion. Not rioting and silly directives like shut up and listen.

Probably poorly worded on my part. Shut up and listen wasn’t meant to preclude conversation, empathy, and candid discussion. In fact, I think it requires it. What I meant by that is that we (white Americans) shouldn’t be leading this discussion. We should be allowing the overall national discussion to be lead by those directly impacted by police brutality and racial discrimination. There is no way as a white American that I will understand the challenges and pains that minorities face in America. Our goal should be to hear them out, engage in introspection, and then engage in a conversation to see how we can help move our country and world forward in a more positive way.

Of note, I think Chris and Brent did a good job of this. They acknowledged the situation last week, but then held off on extensive comments until this week, which were mainly discussing personal experience and growth. They aren’t attacking the validity of the movement, nor are they trying to co-opt it for their own reasons.

Thanks for sharing the story about Stevie Hicks visiting your home, CW, and your discussion about the flag. It wasn’t a thing then, but imagine if Hicks had been malicious and had been intent on canceling you? Instead he gave you his perspective, gave you the benefit of the doubt (so rare these days!), and treated you like a fellow traveler and a friend.

Is there such a thing as "majority culture?" I learned a lot about it by experience in parts of the world where white people are few and far between.
