Ouch. Penn State 2027 Recruiting Decline?

I mean if he could turn recruiting classes at ISU ranked in the 40s and 50s into top 25 teams youd like to think he could turn top 25 recruiting classes into top 10 teams. So youre saying Matt Campbell cant develop players?

There’s a big difference in taking teams into the top 25 vs the top 10. Especially in this area. No matter how many diamonds in the rough you find without elite talent there will always be a hard ceiling against the top teams unless you are an all time coach. CMC is good but he isn’t all time.

His schedule this year is a cakewalk, in 2027 he could very realistically start 3-3 and be sitting on an inferno. He doesn’t have the cake protected rivalry that some schools have either

I think Campbell is too and he got his on the job training here at ISU. The mistakes he made while here, will not occur as often now that he has gone through it. Things like not hiring a special teams coach, will not be repeated there. He also will be coaching a lot better talent that ISU had, making it easier to win a lot of those games like Ohio and Colorado.

The “better talent that ISU had” IS the talent that ISU had and he took most of that with him
And he still lost to Colorado with that talent just last year. Not sure how much he’s learned

So you believe that the talent we get at ISU is equal to that of what PSU gets? He took the best we had, added to what was still at Penn State and they are going to be good.
This idea that he will struggle to recruit there is crazy, you are at a name school with plenty of money. He will recruit as well as Franklin did or better.

Going from “not going to take many players” to “I was forced to take all of them because they didn’t hire the guy I wanted” is a WILD take.

Or he could go 6-0. Every program in the country could go 3-3 in their first 6 games. Im willing to bet he wins at least 5 of his first 6. I dont understand why everyone is still so butthurt he left for if he isn't that good of a coach. Ill bet you thought Saban was going to do what he ended up doing when he left MSU. How stupid was he to leave East Lansing to go to Baton Rouge he'll never win enough to keep people satisfied there. Whos got a better resume for that job than Campbell? Whos the "hot name" coordinator who calls plays with superior talent which automatically makes them ready to run a program? Look at the elite coaches in the game over the history of college football and they generally have one similar to Campbell.

Im not sure if you realize this but nobody committed to ISU. They committed to Campbell and that staff. They likely would have left anyway. So you think Rodgers is trash too right?

Who gives a ****? Those were his guys. Thats the era we live in. Everybody was on that roster because of him and his staff. Guys like Rocco and Brahmer were leaving anyway no matter how much you think they loved Iowa State.

They hit it out the park imo. They got a guy who knows how to build a program and run one. Not the "hot name" assistant, not the guy with Penn State ties,etc. Aka the guys that almost never work out. They made a smart move

I think Eskildsen is a legitimate B1G starter... but Sowell definitely is not at that level... and Robinson and Brookins in the two deeps is pretty yikes as well. Those two have no experience whatsoever basically.

I've never been high on Eskildsen. Made some plays for us, but to me he's just a guy. Sowell? Eh. I've been watching Zay Robinson since he was a freshman in high school. He'll be a DUDE at some point. He was a big loss for ISU in my opinion.

Campbell is a mental midget under pressure during key moments in games ... and can't handle criticism when it sets in.

What in the world are you talking about? Did you actually read Campbell’s quote?

I think Campbell will be just fine, as far as win/loss record goes at PSU. He's a comptetent coach and let's be honest, with expansion, there is no conference that's a juggernaught. It's about being able to avoid all the top dogs in the same year. In fact, that's what Campbell excelled at at ISU, beating teams we probably shouldn't.

I think Campbell's issues will come, if they come, from losing that headscratcher to Rutgers or Purdue and then how he handles the attacks he's going to get from the fanbase.

I lost some of respect for Campbell with how he handled "Hot Seat Guy" and that was just one guy. It's going to be how he's able to deal with, on a super scale, what he didn't really have to deal with a whole lot at ISU. As I said, I think when you look back, his win/loss record will look just fine, if not good.

I definitely appreciate the success that CMC brought to our program. I don’t love all the discussion about him now that’s he’s left, but I get that people want to discuss and we’re in the lull before the season starts. It’s just seems a little like ******** about an ex after the breakup…

To your point, his handling of the expectations will also be a huge challenge. Toledo and ISU are nothing compared to what he’s going to face. Fortunately for him, his first season schedule is 10 win capable.
