Ouch. Penn State 2027 Recruiting Decline?

Franklin was 4-21 against rated teams in the top 10, that was his undoing. At a school like PSU they expect you to win those top ten games at least as much as you lose to them.
Except while they didn’t like it he didn’t get fired for that. He got fired for losing to UCLA and NW.

That’s kinda the whole point. He had a very long leash for not delivering any real quality wins (from a PSU standpoint)

Will be interesting to see how fans react to comments like that. Penn State seems to think they are an elite football program but they really don't have the titles to back that up. Since The Big 10 started having a championship game in 2011 Penn State has won it only once. Basically once every 15 years.
Their fan base is delusional. I’m guessing they’ll come unglued, then Matt will come unglued on them (ref: Hot Seat Guy Incident). I just don’t see him lasting more than a few years there before they realize that he can’t beat Franklin’s record and move on.

Losing to those schools was just what put him over the edge, not beating the top 10 teams was the major cause of it. It had reached the point where they figured now he is losing to teams he always beat before and still not beating the top 10 teams.

Have a bad loss at PSU, there will be 100 Hot Seat Guys waiting to yell at you.

I must be the only one convinced Campbell is a better coach than Franklin. The floor for that is already pretty low.

I think Campbell is too and he got his on the job training here at ISU. The mistakes he made while here, will not occur as often now that he has gone through it. Things like not hiring a special teams coach, will not be repeated there. He also will be coaching a lot better talent that ISU had, making it easier to win a lot of those games like Ohio and Colorado.

Based on what besides personal opinion?
Campbell's record against top teams, with a worse talent floor, is better than Franklin's. Campbell proved he could build something out of nothing. ISU won a whole lot of close and one-score games under Campbell.

He might not be a lot better, but I don't see what PSU lost by making this move.

The talent difference has to come in at some point. Those "low floor" losses he had a few of at ISU will be nearly impossible to have at PSU, his depth there will be quite a bit better. There's some unknown with that for this first season, but should be pretty safe after that.

Time will tell. CMC has some new challenges at PS. One thing is every opponent will be gearing up for the game because it will be a potential “statement win”. He will also be breaking in a new defensive coordinator and new defensive scheme.

I think Campbell will be just fine, as far as win/loss record goes at PSU. He's a comptetent coach and let's be honest, with expansion, there is no conference that's a juggernaught. It's about being able to avoid all the top dogs in the same year. In fact, that's what Campbell excelled at at ISU, beating teams we probably shouldn't.

I think Campbell's issues will come, if they come, from losing that headscratcher to Rutgers or Purdue and then how he handles the attacks he's going to get from the fanbase.

I lost some of respect for Campbell with how he handled "Hot Seat Guy" and that was just one guy. It's going to be how he's able to deal with, on a super scale, what he didn't really have to deal with a whole lot at ISU. As I said, I think when you look back, his win/loss record will look just fine, if not good.

The two sites I checked had a similar takes on the starters and backups. First column is starters and second column backups. Matt may be playing multiple TEs again.

That is scary... if you're a PSU fan.

I think Eskildsen is a legitimate B1G starter... but Sowell definitely is not at that level... and Robinson and Brookins in the two deeps is pretty yikes as well. Those two have no experience whatsoever basically.

A Toledo fan with a Toledo-based handle on here for Campbell's first few seasons lamented how he was continuing his ultra-conservative game day style while also having stretches of poor play-calling, game decisions, and crappy clock management.

Did he improve in these areas while in Ames? I'd answer he showed some improvement, but there was plenty more to go. It will be telling to see if in 3rd & short/4th & short situations, Pedo State comes out with the QB in the shotgun & not under center running sneaks and turning it over on downs. Seemed CMC was almost shamed into going under center in Ames.

Matt is no better of a head coach than Franklin... I will stand by that. Franklin won a TON of games, even a Rose Bowl, just couldn't bring home a natty. I'll be shocked if Matt can bring them a natty.

You pretend like that’s a Matt problem and not an Iowa State problem. I hate saying it, but falling down under the weight of expectations is our ******* calling card at this point.
If you cant win at Penn State there is no way in hell you are winning at Iowa State. Seems to me people should be glad hes gone.

Penn State has already done that. They won two playoff games in 2024. They want more than that.
The playoffs isn't what got Franklin axed it was his inability to win games against Ohio State and Michigan. I fail to see how a guy that wins 8-10 games a year at Iowa State and could consistently play with teams like OU is guaranteed to not do at least that good at a place with more resources. Are you conceding that the Big Ten is a far superior conference? That seems to be what you are saying.

Penn state’s recruiting class has dropped to 23rd nationally.
Now 24th. Dropping like a fly at a picnic in July.
I mean if he could turn recruiting classes at ISU ranked in the 40s and 50s into top 25 teams youd like to think he could turn top 25 recruiting classes into top 10 teams. So youre saying Matt Campbell cant develop players?
