Pollard announces his retirement

Do you know something about why Pollard announced his retirement today, facts not conjecture? If not then it doesn't matter. I just find it funny that a person spends years getting a project up and finally being built, then walks away before it's even close to being completed. I guess I am jaded enough in my 60s to understand that generally there is a reason something happens like this, and it's not that they were ready to retire before the project is finished.

As for Jefferson, they showed him out shooting on the floor, the day of the game. No he was not going to be at 100%, but when your best player and future first round draft pick is not able to play, its hard to say he would not have made a difference if he had played.
Wow…. what a clueless post. A very selfish post honestly.

“Why isn’t JP staying longer like I want him too…. and btw…. why didn’t JJeff tough it out so I could celebrate an ISU Final Four run to?!?”

There’s numerous great reasons for JP to retire…. and he deserves it…. and definitely doesn’t have to answer to any of us idiots on here. And I hate it when people judge athletes’ toughness or the severity of their injury…. you have no flipping clue how he feels. Man…. just ticks me off. Go away. People retire, and athletes get injured…. it’s called LIFE!!

The irony runs deep

So you are buying the story he just decided to retire while he is building a project that he worked years on getting the financing and getting through the BOR, which is just completing the first of many buildings?
No one is saying he does not have a right to retire when he choses too, but I just find it odd that he chose to do so right in the middle of a legacy project that he had spent years trying to achieve.

As for Jefferson it sure wasn't a Willis Reed moment now was it.

Probably premature to reach this conclusion. Would not be surprised that JP will retain a part-time role with the CyTown project after he leaves the AD post. Doing so will enable the new AD's focus to be almost entirely on Athletics only.

Care to elaborate?? Don’t think that I don’t understand what many on here think of me, but honestly I’d love to have a discussion on it because I’ve tried to be better.
You don't want an honest discussion, you think that everyone that is not kowtowing the corporate line are not true fans.

Do I think Pollard was force out, No I do not. But in his statement he said both him and his wife were healthy, so its not health problems for him retiring out of the blue. He doesn't owe us answers for his actions, but without giving answers, he does open himself up to questions about why now.

Pollard has been running the athletic program at ISU for 21 years, through multiple presidents that have pretty much left him alone, doing it how he sees fit. In March of his year Dr. Cook takes over, everything we have heard about the man is that he is closely involved in athletics. ISU immediately announces that they will be selling alcohol in the stands in June, something that Pollard had repeatedly stated would not happen under his watch. It's very possible Pollard for the first time in his life now had a boss that was going to question his decisions and maybe even override his wishes and Jami said "then I am retiring".
Pollard would not be the first person that left or retired after new management takes over a company and will not be the last.

This is certainly possible, but we’ll never hear anything to this effect publicly. Time to move on, recognize his successes, just accept his written statement, and let him and his wife enjoy retirement.

How does Jimmy feel about this so soon after coming to ISU? He seemed like a "Pollard guy".
Anyone being recruited/interviewed by a boss known to be late in their career should ask about retirement, imo. Maybe Jimmy thought it would be another year or two but this should not have been a surprise by any means.

I mean CyTown was setting up to be his magnum opus, at least that's what we think. Of course if I were him I'd retire as soon as possible, I hate working and would love to travel with the money he has. I just think he was intending to stay to see CyTown through. Maybe he will in a different capacity who knows.
So what do you expect him to do for Cytown at this point. Go out with a shovel and start digging the hole for the hotel, or running a jackhammer to break up concrete for a new building? He’s done what he can at this point.

You are retired, were you forced out or just wanted to not work anymore?

JP is like 60, anyone questioning his decision better be determined to work well past that age. I hope I can be done basically around that age.

JP has had well documented health issues. He's been well compensated. He has options and one option is just to hang 'em up.

If he lost the fire or if the job isn't as fun or fulfilling or if he just wants to enjoy the health he has left

His call. He made it. I wish him a long and happy retirement

I swear some people figured we’d have some football national titles by now if JP had done his job. So ignorant.
Nah, these days, the online fanbase is way more concerned with anything but the games on the field. Logos, jerseys, beer sales, CyTown, in-game entertainment, the list goes on. Anything they can whine about.

You're the dunce for thinking participating in a shootaround equates to being able to play.

I like many took a 3rd option, gave them my notice a couple of years before I was planning on leaving. I had maxed out my IPERS, so there was little to no point in continuing to teach. No one is saying the Pollard does not have a right to walk away, and retire, I am sure at his salary level is doesn't need the money to continue working. Just find it strange that you spend so much time and effort over the past 5 years to get a project off the drawing board through all the hassles of the BOR and now its finally being built and he leaves before its completed. No health issues, but calls a new conference and out of the blue announces he is retiring.

Also he will stay until June of 2027 OR as soon as a new AD is hired. Do not most AD that are retiring, stick around after the replacement is hired and help them through the transition of power. I noticed that the former president at ISU sure did.

Was hoping for a Willis Reed moment, that the best player on the team shows his teammates and coaches he is there for them, and is going to go as long as he can. He chose not too, and has to live with the decision.

Things I liked about JP: Keeping us in the XII during both missiles crisis, Hoiberg Hire, Dresser/Metcalf hires, Matt Campbell, Paul Rhodes both hiring and firing, TJ hire, adding women's wrestling, JTS renovations, new softball/soccer field by Towers, Money Management (prior to NIL), standing up to the bigger XII brands, and most importantly program stability in a world of volatility

Things I dislike or still question about JP: Cael Sanderson leaving, Chizik hire, Prohm (even though that was more Leath), Kevin Jackson's long leash, Booze/fans slobs, I-State logo, the gymnastics program fiasco, CyTown (still don't understand the pro forma projections on how this will work, but blindly hopeful), Jimmy Rogers hiring process, and navigating NIL.

History will be very kind and there is no doubt he has elevated Iowa State
Chizik hire was a great one, you just look at it from hindsight. Rogers hiring was also brilliantly done, perhaps could have announced to the team at a different time than the CMC telling the team he was leaving, but things needed to happen fast. Beer does cause issues in stadiums, one of the reasons Iowa City is so awful to visit, I've done so as an Iowa fan and as an ISU fan, neither experience was good and the drunkenness was a lot of that. Times have changed financially unfortunately so that needed to change. I-State lego, I think is iconic and awesome, you just have a different opinion. I know in Omaha sports radio, Kugler and the like made fun of it saying who does Iowa State think they are. They thought the logo was too good for lowly ISU. All the rest of your negatives, Pollard had little control over.

Pollard was great, he made enough it is no problem retiring early, College sports are a sham and the polar opposite of what they were originally designed to be these days.

2 most important things for an AD are the FB coach and MBB coach. They are now set for a couple of years. So it’s honestly a perfect time to change ADs. Cytown is as far as JP can go, it’s the developer now that has to push forward so it’s a good time for that to move on.

He may have wanted to step down but didn’t feel Winterstein was the right one to replace him, which I agree with, so now cook has had a chance to get his feet wet and turn his attention to the AD spot.

We don’t know what he told his boss/s, why assume the negative angle first that several have is what I’m curious about
