"Goodbye" American Airlines Center, and "Hello" vacant/dying malls

Why?

The New York Giants play in New Jersey. The DC teams played in Maryland for years. The Miami Dolphins play in Miami Gardens - not Miami. The Detroit Lions played in Pontiac, the Pistons in Auburn Hills.

Lots of teams named for cities actually play in their suburbs.
We don't mention A****n H***s around these parts.....

So the Plano venue is going to be a purpose-built, dedicated hockey arena? Same with the Mavs new home?

Seems weird they wouldn't come together with one new arena for both clubs, one massively cool entertainment district to bring in revenues for both.
That appears to be what is happening.

There have been recent tensions between the two organizations, including a recent lawsuit. It doesn't appear that they are best buds.

The Sands group (majority Mavs owners), in recent PR interviews, has been showing off their Asian resort/casino property. They have been lobbying to legalize gambling in Texas because they want a resort/casino as part of their new entertainment complex.

Gaglardi, the Stars owner, is Canadian, but his mother is a native Texan, and he still has family in Texas. In an an interview I saw a couple of years ago, he suggested that brick and mortar casinos would be a stretch for Texas.

My speculation...Sands seems to have a much higher priority on gambling than Gaglardi does, and Sands is going to have to create a significant amount of local political turmoil to make that happen. Given that Gaglardi has Texas ties, he may not want to be part of that mess. I think both groups have different "entertainment" philosophies, and are going their separate ways.

If both move, none of the professional teams will actually play in Dallas proper. The northern burbs of Dallas are growing like heck, the current arena is on the northern part of downtown, we were there once for a Mavs game, was a nice arena but nothing great.
Technically, the Valley View Mall area is still in Dallas proper, albeit the very northern edge. That the Mavs are "staying in Dallas" has been a big part of the PR regarding their leaving the AAC.

Wasn't there strong rumors after Cuban sold that the Sands group thought they could maybe move the team to Vegas?

They wanted and pressed the legislature in Texas to have legalized gambling in the state, that fell through, Their plan was to build a new arena and open up a few casinos. They would be close together on the same site so people could double dip, gamble and see some games, plan B was to move the team to Vegas, if they could not get gambling passed in the state of Texas.

Yes, there were rumors. Cuban still owns 27% of the Mavs.

The Cuban-Sands relationship is also very interesting. Right after he sold the Mavs, Cuban was also pushing the casino/resort vision for the Mavs entertainment complex. I haven't seen him doing that recently. And he has been relatively quiet during the time leading up to the announcement of the Mavs leaving the AAC.

In an interview in March, Cuban stated that he doesn't regret selling controlling share in the Mavs, but he regrets selling it to the Sands group.

The "club" thing is very real from my experience.
Not just hockey/basketball but also football - US Bank has a Polaris club that has mini food stations that are kinda cool.
US Bank has multiple club areas. If you've never done it, I highly recommend doing the stadium tour, it's really cool.

Dickies is fantastic for concerts. Holds around 14,000 with great sound. Although the owner of Dickies brand no longer wants to hold naming rights so a name change will be coming.
I'll be there next week to see Rush. Looking forward to it.

Lots of arenas in DFW. Dickies arena is pretty new if memory serves...
True. There is also Memorial Auditorium in Dallas, which is being renovated for the Dallas Wings (who are currently playing most games at College Park Center on UTA's campus in Arlington). MA will supposedly have capacity of 8400 when it is finished in 2028.

The Valley View space for the Mavs has plenty of room to eventually accommodate a casino if/when the State of TX permits it.

The proposed locations for the new Mavs and Stars arenas are only 8 miles apart with similar plans for their arenas and surrounding entertainment/residential/business districts.

It is ridiculous that both are going their separate ways on their respective projects.

Maybe the Big 12 should host the MBB and WBB tourneys there! :jimlad::jimlad::jimlad:
NEVER! When AAC “hosted “ the Big 12 MBB Tournament in 2003, 2004, & 2006, it was probably the least attended tournament in our history. The fans from Texas only came to their games and the metro-area residents continually asked us, “Why are you in town?” because they were unaware of the tournament. The B12 should never leave KC where the whole city embraces us!

And 6 miles further north is The Star in Frisco, the Dallas Cowboys headquarters/entertainment district...

The Stars say their fan base is more north of the metroplex as a reason to move to Plano and they are probably right. Will be interesting to see what happens with the AAC and Victory Park area

It might be years-if ever-that Texas legalizes gambling. There always seems to be a lot of push back

The DFW metro area couldn’t give two s**t’s about college basketball

So basically they want a massive revenue bump by building a new entertainment district around their stadium, but they want someone else to pay for the construction of said entertainment district and arena.

How did we get here that there is an expectation that taxpayers foot the bill for these things? Would a local manufacturing facility say, “we’ll move to your town, but we want you to pay for the factory and then sign it over to us”? I know there’s often tax incentives and such, but we’re talking actual construction costs for facilities that has the revenue go to the team.
