*** Cyclone Fanatic Fast Food Tournament Sweet 16 ***

We were big on A&W being a treat growing up. My parents actually just asked if I wanted the mugs we got back then because there is some nostalgia behind them. Doing the math it looks like these are from around 1994.

Anyone else remember the lore of the 1/3 pounder? Also they’ve got the dumbass and dumbass commercial.

Loved the frosted mugs.

Papa Burger, Mama Burger, TEEN BURGER and Baby Burger.

Most of the ones around here are combo FF joints with another. The most common in this area are in combination with LJS. The one local in Florida is in combination with a KFC.
I remember papa-mama-teen-baby.

I’ve been voting A&w in the bracket largely for nostalgia. It’s the first drive-in/fast food I recall eating, was about the only thing of its type near our home when I was a child. It was a treat when family went out a few times a year.

I think out might not have been as much fun for mom and dad because my sisters and I (mostly me, probably) got ketchup/mustard and ice cream mess all over the back seat area.

Indianola still has the order by phone A&W. We try to go down there once a summer or so. The Farmer is my go to, which is a tenderloin topped with a cheese and a burger. Clarinda had one when I was growing up, but we called the Farmer the Big McCoy. I worked there in HS. Burnt down a week before I left for college. They are still scattered around Iowa and always seem to be in towns near where we have family that we visit.

Fun Fact: The Culver's people owned an A&W when they first got in the restaurant business. Their Root Beer is almost a clone of A&W's.
I worked at the one in Ames for a semester when I was in school. Went home smelling like fryer grease every day.

B-Bops is good IMO, their fries are outstanding. But there's no way it's better than Culver's.
If we're going burger vs burger, I'm choosing B-Bops 10 times out of 10, and there is absolutely nothing special about B-Bops burger. It's a conveyor belt patty that comes out the same each and every time. Culver's does a smash-type burger that gets that slick surface from the flat top which I honestly don't like.

Expanded offerings roster gives Culver's the edge for me. And I like B-Bops fries, but I'm a fiend for crinkle cut

Im the opposite, crinkle cut fries are average to me.

Not if you eat in the restaurant. If you're dashing them, tell your driver to leave the top of the bag open. The steam makes the fries soggy during the drive otherwise.

The fries are the only differentiator for Five Guys. Their burgers are mid.
Yeah but then they’ll be cold and possibly half gone depending on who the driver is.

Maybe it’s different near you, but my Culver’s crinkle cut fries are grocery store Ore-Ida freezer bag quality. They’re disgusting.
I mean, most restaurants are using some form of frozen fry that isn't much different than what you find in a grocery store.

Agreed on the burgers, prefer B-bops fries but the curds from Culvers are the best side among the two

The key difference to me is a) B-Bops serves Pepsi rather than coke which is huge for this Mt Dew guy and b) B-Bops is on average 5-10 minutes faster than Culvers.

Culver's pretzel bites put them over the top for me. Spicy Chicken Sandwich is solid too.

Don't love their burgers.
I don't like Culvers butter burgers at all - something about the fried butter and burger grease just tastes off to me, like maybe its gone bad? Turns my gut later too.

+1 on the spicy chix sandwich, thats what I get there and its good.

yup...i let my anger go about Portillo's. there isn't one even in Iowa so I can't be shocked that it lost early.
Davenport, right next to Raising Canes. There are about 40 food joints in a 5 block square at Elmore and 53rd. If you're coming through it's about 2-3 blocks off I-74 at the 53rd St. Exit.

I also like the Reuben at Culvers. They really do have a wide variety for fast food, versus something like Raising Canes - which has your choice of chicken fingers. Or chicken fingers.

But the one in Muscatine literally always gets my order wrong. Was in Chicago last week and the one there did not include the onion rings that I ordered... and paid for.

That sucks. Culver's onion rings are legit, possibly the best in all of fast food IMO.
