*** Cyclone Fanatic Fast Food Tournament Sweet 16 ***

DQ and A&W are not places where people go eat a meal. They are predominately dessert or treat kinda places.

I am shocked A&W is still in this. I haven't even seen one of them in 40 years, let alone eaten at one.
A&W has really good burgers. I get a burger combo with cheese curds instead of fries, and a root beer float. So good!

I remember the one in Ames 50 years ago, where you had to phone in your order from the booth. I remember back then there was the Papa Bear, Mama Bear, and Baby Bear burgers (or something along those lines). There's one just around the corner from my office. Maybe I need to head over for lunch sometime.
Papa Burger, Mama Burger, TEEN BURGER and Baby Burger.

Most of the ones around here are combo FF joints with another. The most common in this area are in combination with LJS. The one local in Florida is in combination with a KFC.

1000%. You can make Chinese food so fast. Why someone would opt for something pre-made sitting in a warmer versus made fresh is beyond me. Hell, if I call in Chinese take-out, I need to be in my car already cuz that **** will be ready before I make the 5 minute drive.

Yep. We have our fav Chinese take-out within 10 minutes and fresher than any chain.

A little surprised that there was no Greek food represented in the tourney. We have Mr Gyros in Kansas City with a few locations, but maybe it is just a regional thing.

As I wrote before, Sonic has never given me a decent amount of quality food AND quality service in the same visit. Ever. I quit going about 15 years ago. And the local one shut down after about 3 years in business.

B-Bops is not anywhere close. I think I may have tried it about 20 years ago in Des Moines, but have no memory of it good or bad. So I by default vote for the other option. Same with In-N-Out.

Is In-N-Out the junior high humor version for fast food that Kum and Go was for convenience stores?
B-Bops is good IMO, their fries are outstanding. But there's no way it's better than Culver's.

Indianola still has the order by phone A&W. We try to go down there once a summer or so. The Farmer is my go to, which is a tenderloin topped with a cheese and a burger. Clarinda had one when I was growing up, but we called the Farmer the Big McCoy. I worked there in HS. Burnt down a week before I left for college. They are still scattered around Iowa and always seem to be in towns near where we have family that we visit.

Fun Fact: The Culver's people owned an A&W when they first got in the restaurant business. Their Root Beer is almost a clone of A&W's.

In-N-Out is a west coast brand (they’ve expanded to Texas at least now), and it’s the arguably the best fast food burger. It’s the varsity team captain of fast food burgers anyway. It’s got a diner feel to it. Everyone who works there has to wear the old 1950’s paper hats that diners used to have as well as striped pants and white shirts.

I've eaten at one Mr Gyros and it was decent. I just live closer to Holy Land Cafe, and their gyros have never failed to disappoint me.

KFC, Subway and Burger King are 3 of the worst I can think of. How they are still in this is baffling.

Mild disagree on Subway. My kids like it and maybe a year ago they dragged me into one and frankly the menu and offering has improved greatly. Some individual locations might still be sketchy, but I wouldn't auto-pass on Subway.

However I haven't crossed the threshold of a BK in well over 10 years. It is always so bad, so slow, so poorly executed. I cannot fathom how enough people keep choosing them enough for them to stay solvent.

Is it similar to the charbroiled quarter pounder from Hardee’s back in the 80s? Because that burger lives in my head rent free. I wish they would go back to whatever they were doing back then. Give us the styrofoam packaging too while you’re at it.

Frankly In-N-Out and Five Guys are remarkably similar in the burger category, in my limited experience. Five Guys has better fries.

However going to an In-N-Out anywhere around meal time and the drive-thru will be crazy long.

In my experiences, Five Guys fries are always limp, soggy, and cold. Love their burgers, tho!
Not if you eat in the restaurant. If you're dashing them, tell your driver to leave the top of the bag open. The steam makes the fries soggy during the drive otherwise.

The fries are the only differentiator for Five Guys. Their burgers are mid.

To be fair, I live in NJ where there is a quality Italian deli on every other corner. I had not even considered going into a Subway in many many years, but recently when back in Iowa for a graduation it was the only option in a small town. It was worse than I remembered. They actually asked if I wanted the sandwich toasted which I did. I then wondered what the purpose of the toaster was as the bread was still soggy and the meat cold.

I often get double toasted. Have them do the bacon alone first, then again after the sandwich is built and before the veggies/mayo or whatever.
