Williams & Blum: Congress vs. College Sports, Momcilovic Gone & Texas Tech Fires Back

To be honest, the show is not nearly as fun to do these days having to talk about all of the negative stuff. I wish it was all sunshines and rainbows all of the time, but then many of you would crush us for being too positive.

It's not perfect, but we're doing our best with what we've got. College sports are on fire right now and unfortunately, the school we all love is in the crosshairs. It's a massive story and we're going to talk about it because - that's what we do.
Good work CW.

If Iowa State is going to survive this, it’s going to be from how in politics, those with the most to lose tend to cause the most noise and pain for elected officials. We need Iowa State fans to be informed, single issue voters

It's a constant problem in our specific world and is a real challenge ... Blum and I are so deep now, where we are talking over the heads of much of the audience. Most sports fans just want to hear about the sports, which I totally get. This is exactly why we are bringing on Jake and Jackson specifically to do a lot of the stuff that Brent and I used to do. We need to serve everybody, and not expect the audience to just care about what we care about.

HOWEVER: It cannot be overstated how important all of the stuff that's going on right now in college sports is for the future of Iowa State University, the institution.

What CW and Blum are missing is that the opposition (mostly Democrats) is saying that the bill limits what athletes can earn while leaving coach, AD, and executive salaries untouched. The bill would cap player pay, restrict player movement and still have no union. The labor wing is saying the workers (players) should get to negotiate before anyone locks in a ceiling. It's not a socialism/free market debate, it's management vs. labor.
Cruz-Cantwell does not restrict unionization.

@brentblum
Appreciate the feedback. Can be a challenge when the major stories that are impacting Iowa State aren’t always the most satisfying to discuss and yet are pretty significant. Could use some games starting!
One correction to the discussion on the podcast. Pooling media rights is optional although the SEC and B10 agreeing to pool would be to their extreme financial benefit, but obviously not to the benefit of their current owners, ESPN and Fox:

Chris, the one major flaw iin your reasoning on the Cruz-Cantwell Bill is assuming 100 percent Republican Senate Support. I think you will find a lot of resistance from Republicans in Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Tennesse, maybe Soth Carolina and Florida. The latter 2 have major schools in other Conferences and may have some independence like Cruz and Cornyn in Texas. And Ohio, who knows? The issue is the SEC Senators have the same big dollar supporters the SEC schools have.
3 of the four co-sponsors of the bill are from TX, MO and WA (2 SEC states and one B10 state)

Also there is this:

We are not content with you doing your best. We demand you to be "perfect!" And by perfect, we mean saying exactly what each of us wants you to say.

In other words, without the sarcasm, listen, but don't be too oblicated to our comments. You guys are great. Trust your instincts. They have done pretty well for you so far.

Assuming if we hire Mouser and Campbell would still take his 23, there are maybe 8-10 players left of value that we would have likely overpaid for out of loyalty.
Good point. what those guys may have said during that whirlwind of a few days also could have changed.....would have CMC encouraged guys to stay to help Mouse or would he done what was best for his situation at PSU. We never will know.

Imagine a world where a gallon of water and a yard of mulch is worth more than Milan and we will start to be on a similar page.

Sorry, but I don't recall them saying it so strongly. I remember them saying that Milan really wants to go to the NBA, but I remember lots of disclaimers over the last few months about not knowing for sure what is going to happen.

Seems that some of the listeners mistook their opinions for reporting, even though they often say that it is just their opinions.
I think it's easy for some listeners to get confused between the topics that these guys have inside knowledge on (a lot of recruiting, past events from coaches) and things they are just guessing about (NBA exec's thoughts).

They usually say that it is just their opinion, but it's easy to miss if you're only passively listening.

I agree with this statement. I just think that they let on that the subset of "inside knowledge" is larger than it actually is.
