ROUND TWO!

If you missed the first contest, read the original post in that thread to catch up.

A reminder: I wanted to celebrate our own @ChrisMWilliams and his Fanatic: Stories from 20 years inside Iowa State book with Rob Gray. I'll be giving away three books total and local ethical bagman @Cycsk is kindly helping me send them out.

HOW DO YOU SOLVE THIS PUZZLE?

To give people time to see this thread, there are two parts. PART ONE is below. I'll post PART TWO (by editing this post) on Thursday (June 4). The clue from PART ONE will help you solve PART TWO.

WANT A HINT?

To keep this thread visible, post something random (pets???) in this thread. If you do that, you can ask me a single question via private DM about PART ONE that I can answer with yes or no. One question per account.

That will give you a head start on PART TWO. Then once PART TWO is released, the first person that posts the solution in this thread wins.

THE PUZZLE:

PART ONE - What does this mean?

The year after the crash, Paul came to explain.
Aloysius tried too, but ignore the law of Latium.
From William's forest came intricate plates.
The smell of lavender preceeded the prize.
Now mull over the Colonel's past.
For that is where it comes from.

PART TWO:

(Puzzle to come on Thursday.)

Even if you already have the book, let me know in this thread if I can improve this process somehow. After the books, I might keep doing more contests for goodies from the CF Shop.

It's tough out there, so trying to spread the love. Any other thoughts or questions, let me know.

Huh? I have no idea about this puzzle. I can’t even think of an intelligent question to ask you that might help me.

Glad my job is only to send the book to the winner.

I've Googled a bunch of the terms and still have no idea. @Kagavi is probably enjoying this too much.

Thank you to those who have sent questions so far.

However I did have to issue a Letter of Reprimand to someone who asked a question before posting in the thread. The Big 12 was kind enough to let me use their prefilled template - just had to delete "Iowa State" throughout.

In addition to questions that ask me if a "solution" is correct, you may also find it useful to ask more of a generic yes/no question that can nudge you in the right direction.

The cat picture almost, ALMOST, made me give a bonus question to them. Please tempt me with more photos.

Jumping in to say no one has come close to the clue for PART ONE yet. I appreciate everyone who has participated, because it will help me adjust (if needed) how I present PART TWO. It's always tough to gauge the difficulty level of these things.

Down the road I'm actually hoping to create a real life treasure hunt by hiding a loot of treasure worth a good chunk somewhere in Ames or the ISU campus and releasing a cryptic clue. It would be fun. So doing little things like this helps me prepare.

Think Forrest Fenn or Jason Rohrer (Project Skydrop). Actually I've never seen the physical treasure for the Project Skydrop until now and it literally looks like a gold Cyclone sculpture. Good omen
