Milan Momcilovic tweets "entering NBA draft and portal"

What's crazy about even $6-7 million NIL being reported, the 120% scale for rookie first year contracts at pick #7 is $6,889,200, so basically, the NIL game is going to blow up the NBA salary scales at this rate.
I'm wondering if the NBA's influence at some point is was finally creates an actual salary cap for the college game?

Not only the G League, but you will end up seeing some players hang it up sooner given the early earnings. Think about a guy like Hoiberg who made $10 million over 10 years. He lived modestly, invested and was set before ever entertaining the idea of coaching. Now guys will have out earned 10 year NBA guys in less than 2 college seasons. Some will not want to endure the long-term grind and will be set for life at much younger ages.
Interesting enough, around 60% of NBA players are broke 5 years after retirement. Set for life is different for NBA players vs average people.

That number is often cited but is unverified and almost certainly BS. Actual studies on pro athletes show their bankruptcy rate is not that different than the average population. A couple of unverified claims like the 60% number and some high profile examples of athletes who lost all their money have greatly exaggerated this as a problem.

Curious how the NBA feels about players staying in college longer? Isn't this sort of killing the G league? Not that the g league makes money or anything but college is now competing with the NBA for players and potentially the attention of fans.
Ultimately it will get to a new steady state, though, and the same # of roster spots in the NBA and the same # of guys coming into the pros out of college, they're just older on average. So in theory G-league still has a use. It might be able to be smaller, but generally the G league just probably has more 22-23 year old guys instead of 19-20 year olds.

It's still in transition, but in the end there's the same number of roster spots, same number of draft spots. It will just be the 19 year old lottery guys, foreign guys, and 22-23 year old college players in the draft. Those college guys with eligibility that aren't going to be lottery picks are just going to keep shrinking. It's almost at this point now, and if Milan stays in will be an outlier.

So does the NBA or NCAA release a list at midnight? I guess I didn't think we'd have wait until the absolute deadline to get Milan's decision.

I don't know, but I'm guessing Kentucky and Louisville reporters will all tweet at 12:01 if they don't hear of his commitment

This is giving Milan a lot of free press!!! Is he staying in the draft or returning, and to what school??? Also, if schools are willing to give Milan $6-7 M, does that mean he is basically an NBA caliber player and worthy of a chance to make a roster? Or is that price too much for a player that is a great shooter, with some limitations schools are willing to shell out?. Just some deep thoughts today, waiting on the decision.

He is definitely the talk of the entire sports world for the last couple days …. Pretty good ISU press too !
I even saw a written piece saying that his best option would be to return to ISU !!

First, this situation sucks because Milan isn’t coming back to Iowa State, but it’s also fascinating.

I don’t think anyone would argue he will likely earn more money staying in college than he will if he stays in the draft pool. At this point, if the numbers are legit (and I think they are), he’s going to get the same money as a guy being drafted in the 5-10 range. Likely more than the guys drafted 7+. If he stays in the draft, he’s probably a fringe early 2nd round guy. Likely mid-2nd round.

Jeff Goodman interviewed 10 NBA executives about what they think a number of guys who hadn’t made a decision yet should do. All 10 said Milan should stay in college. The same 10 said Christian Anderson (Texas Tech) should stay in the draft.

Think about that. Christian Anderson is a really good player, but if he’s drafted in the top 10, I’d be very surprised. I mean, very surprised. He’s probably in the 10-15ish range. Maybe not even than high. Are schools not offering Anderson the rumored $6-$7M they are offering Milan? If not…why? Anderson doesn’t shoot it like Milan does, but he is a more dynamic player.

Again…fascinating.

Will he “announce” that he is staying in the draft, or will there simply not be a commitment announcement?

The longer the day goes on, the better I feel but I also have my nut cup on.

I also saw on a Kentucky board that one of their players said he was switching his jersey number from 22 to 2 so that seems like a bad sign..

My assumption is he's just announcing if he's staying or withdrawing from the draft. School decision would likely be in the coming days if he withdraws.

There have been a few players announce their intentions in the last hour or so. Seems like they all have been announcing via national sport writers who received the information from their agents. I would expect something similar with Milan.

Edit: one was funny:

And if Milan pulls out of the draft, nothing says he also has to commit to a school by midnight EDT tonight. He just needs to decide about the NBA by midnight

I imagine he'd want to have all that nailed down at the same time, as once he pulls out of the NBA that's one less option he has to weigh against.

I don’t get why he’s delaying it so much, he knows the options. Either he’s gonna go get a bag at Kentucky or St John’s or he’s gonna be an early/mid 2nd round pick. He states he wants to be in the NBA, he is who he is at this point and I doubt he will improve his draft stock any better than he did this year.

I don't think he will say anything. He will stay in the draft and they will show him on the list. Nothing to gain by playing the social media game.
