Obsession (new movie)

Just for the record:

and

"Obsession is messed up. Up-and-coming writer and director Curry Barker knows his craft, obviously, but he’s used his considerable talents to tell a truly horrific, off-putting story that will be difficult to shake. It unfurls with the grace of a sledgehammer and just keeps pounding.

I realize that, for many horror aficionados, all that is a selling point. But if I had a wish in my back pocket that wouldn’t ultimately lead to terror and death, I might wish that this movie had never been made. Or, at least, that I didn’t have to review it." from

Negative review from plugged in? Damn guess we should just shut the thread down. No way this movie or Curry's career can overcome that.

I'm not really sure what to make of this review. The author doesn't like a horror movie because it has the elements of a horror movie.
A horror movie is supposed to make you uncomfortable. It's supposed to have elements that make you feel icky. If not you have a PG13 movie designed for 13 year olds that has a bunch of jump scares and nothing else.
There are plenty of horror films that people like that I don't find appealing. Hell, I think The Shining sucked yet many people consider it some sort of masterpiece. Horror is an interesting genre that has many subgenres.
Yup. The Shining is truly laughably awful to me, but know I'm in the minority which is fine and that many think it's one of the scariest movies ever.

Obsession’s word of mouth is incredible and the history this movie is making is incredibly rare.

This is the second weekend in theaters and it’s going to INCREASE its box office take over opening weekend. That never happens for any genre. A 55% drop for a horror movie in its second week is considered very good. To increase? This film has legs.

And it’s already a top 5 most profitable movie ever made. Made for $750,000 its on track to make $100M.

Finally going to see it tonight with a buddy of mine! I've done my best to not hype it up in my head too much and just go into it as much of a blank slate as possible. I tend to get too excited about some movies and set the bar too high. Hopefully I'll be back here tonight/tomorrow morning with a glowing review.

I’m actually going again tomorrow with a bunch of people.

Well it was essentially everything I'd heard it was and pretty much right in line with what I hoped. Have to say both leads were better than expected but Inde Navarrette was just on another level. I watch a lot of horror and can usually see most scares coming but she had me on edge and uneasy constantly. Just a constant feeling that something was about to happen but you didn't know when, what, how cringey, how ****** up, etc. Not many if any horror movies these days pull it off like Obsession. Definitely worth seeing in a theater with a crowd so anybody even slightly intrigued by this movie just go asap.

Linking a few negative reviews proves...what exactly? Using Plugged In, a site literally run by a conservative Christian ministry to warn parents about scary movies, as a source is an incredible take. And another link is a....Reddit post? Dude.

You’re trying far too hard to look right, but all you're doing is being cringey. Move on.
The critics reviews from all sorts of publications on Rotten Tomatoes are generally very positive. And that's on top of the high audience score.

I'm definitely stoked to see this. I also thought the hype over Hereditary and Weapons was well deserved too and I enjoyed both of those on the big screen.

Weapons was originally supposed to be released around Xmas, but it tested so well with audiences that it got a Fall release instead. Which led to a hefty box office haul and an Oscar win, and now even a rumored prequel/sequel. It's really a great time to be a fan of the horror movie genre.

Glad you liked! It sits with you too.

Whoa. I didn't know that Curry Barker's next director opp is a reimagining of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Given how he directed Obsession...sign me up

My wife and I just saw the movie tonight. Weird and creepy, I really liked it. I thought there was some pretty good acting.

The second weekend saw a 41% increase over the first weekend. I really didn't see much advertisement for this movie. In fact I can only remember seeing the trailer one time and maybe that was on IMDB when I was looking for what horror movies were coming out.
Word of mouth is driving this.

$84m worldwide so far. Not too bad for a movie that cost $750k to make and sold to a distributor for $15m.

For starters, where do you think name-calling ranks among methods of convincing others of your viewpoint?

One last time for those in the cheap seats...

Horror is a genre that appeals to specific tastes. People who don't care for it are not likely to go to the film. People who do care for it are likely to go to the film.

Polling people who go to such a film and getting a high positive score is no indication that it's a without question a good film. The results show just that people who go to horror movies liked it.

What about that is so hard to understand?
Asking if someone is being purposefully obtuse is not name calling. It is asking if you are intentionally not getting it because you enjoy the argument.

I opened this thread confusing Obsession with Pressure so I was really confused when people started talking horror.

:D

It's kind of funny seeing Damian Lewis who played **** Winters in Band of Brothers landing at Normandy playing Montgomery in this one also on D-Day.
