Just for all you Ankeny bashers

One that never gets mentioned is Alohana Hawaiian Grill. I've eaten there a couple times and it's really good for what it is. I also enjoy Hawkers Kitchen and Fun Chinese Cuisine.
Can't believe I forgot to list Alohana. That might be my favorite spot in Ankeny. Crab Rangoons are elite and the #2 BBQ chicken with the rice and pasta salad is incredible.

It's a roll of the dice. One that I personally wouldn't make because it's such a big investment but many people do. The majority probably turn out ok but some end up spending thousands or 10's of thousands in the hole trying to make things right. Nobody gets "wowed" and gets something that exceeds their expectations.

There's enough inventory right now that I, personally, would look for somewhere more established. I'm just a random dude with an opinion talking **** on an ISU forum though.
That makes sense and I'm with you, its not a roll of the dice I'd be willing to take as a home buyer.

We've been in contact with a developer about some of our land and DR is one of the potential lot buyers if its developed.

Big fan of the rangoons too. I think I've only ever had the chicken katsu for the entrée because it was that good the first time I had it.

As someone who lived in central Iowa 35-40 yrs ago, its stunning to see what Ankeny has become. It used to be a tiny 1A/2A school and they have, what, 3 high schools now??

If Ames weren't so anti-growth, Ames would have 200k residents and Ankeny wouldn't be what it is today.

(Have friends who live in Michigan at the little league regionals last year and they loved Ankeny - had a blast!).
No Ames would not. Ames might be too anti-growth, but none of the grand ideas that got shot down would’ve made a difference.

Ankeny, Pleasant Hill, Waukee and Grimes grew faster because, wait for it, they are adjacent to Iowa’s largest city and not 35 miles away.

In no alternate history was Ames going to grow at the rate of Ankeny. Ames has grown almost 40% since 2000, which for Iowa is basically explosive growth.

It’s grown faster than Iowa City, with the exception being North Lib and Coralville areas closer to CR.

That man is a hero. Geese are rats with wings and Ankeny has year round population of those vermin.

I was just about to type those words, literally verbatim lol. I'll pay his fine so he can run more of those things down.

If it weren't for ISU, Ames would be Boone. There's a reason why more people choose to live in Ankeny, even when you include ISU's total enrollment.
So if not for the largest employer and entertainment draw, a town in the middle of cornfields would be a not as nice town in the middle of a cornfields. Very bold analysis.

Ankeny is getting some better stuff and making an effort to be more than a sea of tan and gray houses with chain stores. It’s not my cup of tea, but a lot of people like it because it has about anything a person could need and has good proximity to Des Moines.

I can see why people like it, and I understand why people don’t get the draw.

Red Chillez, Siam Table, District 36, Flavory Bistro, Portafinos, Silk Elephant, Main Street Cafe and Bakery, Breakfast Club, Pho 85, and so on. There are tons of local establishments with good food in Ankeny. I think people just drive down the major streets of these towns and see a Chillis or Applebee's and just assume that's all there is.
I have been an Ankeny basher and will always poke fun at it, but there are getting to be some really good restaurant options. Red Chillez is money.

I rented in Ankeny for 4 years during and after law school; I lived in that “District” area, and honestly it was fantastic.

I ended up buying in pleasant hill because the same houses would be $100,000 cheaper.

PH is.. okay. Not a lot of restaurants or great attractions.. although I eat out less now, so that’s probably good.

I will die on the hill that the South Ankeny HyVee is the best HyVee in the metro, and (at least 3 years ago) the Chinese food was by far the best of any of the HyVees.

It's one of my new favorite spots. Another I would highly recommend that I don't hear talked about a lot is Flavory Bistro. Fantastic Mediterranean restaurant but it's small so can be a bit of a wait during busy times without a reservation.

Really appreciate the response and information. Would you say that most of their homes end up with significant problems or is it more of a roll of the dice where a person could either get a house without major issues, just low end finishes, or they could get one that is a big headache?
They churn houses out and many have the same issues because the same sub contractors are doing every house. They're buying fixtures in bulk, using the same architectural drawings, etc. so if there's an issue, they already bought 1000 fixtures and just find a way to put a band aid on it. The cheapest everything and you get what you pay for.

I've worked on many of these homes and they all have similar issues.

I like that place too.

I was responding to a person who posted "Ankeny is Ames taint." Sorry my bold analysis bothered you.

I live here, it's fine. Traffic can blow but South Duff can be just as bad. That said id rather live in Ames
